  How precious, Lord, Thy sacred Word, What light and joy those leaves afford To souls in deep distress! Thy precepts guide our doubtful way, Thy fear forbids our feet to stray, Thy promise leads to rest. Thy threat’nings wake our slum’bring eyes, And warn us where our danger lies; But ’tis Thy Gospel, Lord, That makes the guilty conscience clean, Converts the soul, and conquers sin, And gives a free reward.

  O the joy while thus we meet, Learning here at Jesus’ feet Words of truth that point the way To realms of day! Precious words of worth untold, Ever new but never old, May we read them o’er and o’er, And love them more. Words that tell of Him Who came In His Father’s blessèd name; And the angels at His birth Sang “Peace on earth”; Words that tell His love to men, How He died and rose again, To provide a mansion fair That we might share. Words that kindly say to all, While their tones like music fall, “Come to Jesus while you may; He calls today”; If our heart we open wide, He will then with us abide; We may dwell with Him above, Where all is love.

  There’s a picture fair and bright, Hanging still on memory’s wall: There I see my father take the Book divine; Dear home faces gathered round, As the shadows softly fall, And a light from out the pages seems to shine. Refrain Dear old Book, precious Book, On thy pages soiled and worn I love to look! O thou balm for hearts that ache, For my sainted mother’s sake, Thou art dearer day by day, thou blessèd Book! While I look, the pictures change, And I see my mother’s face; In her hand the Bible, worn and stained with tears; But the light is shining still, And within the hallowed place There is comfort for earth’s griefs and doubts and fears. • [Ef 6:10] Be Strong In God

  Be strong in God and in His power; Put on His armor every day. Thus you can take your stand each hour; The devil’s schemes won’t lead you astray. The battle’s like a flood, Though not ’gainst flesh and blood; But ’gainst the spiritual realm, With Satan at the helm; You face the powers of darkness. Take God’s full armor—your life surround, So when the day of evil appears, You’ll then be able to stand your ground, And after all, to stand without fear. Stand firm, then, in the faith, The belt of truth in place; Breastplate of righteousness, Feet shod with readiness That comes from the true Gospel of peace. Take, over all, the shield of faith, To quench the flaming arrows outpoured. Salvation’s helmet wear over your face, And take the Word, the Spirit’s sword. Pray in the Spirit’s power, All kinds of prayers each hour. Be always on alert, And pray for all the Church. Through God you’ll win the battle!

• [Ef 6:10] Behold! The Christian Warrior Stand

  Behold! the Christian warrior stand In all the armor of his God; The Spirit’s sword is in his hand; His feet are with the Gospel shod; In panoply of truth complete, Salvation’s helmet on his head; With righteousness a breastplate meet, And faith’s broad shield before him spread. He wrestles not with flesh and blood, But principalities and powers, Rulers of darkness, like a flood, Nigh, and assailing at all hours. Nor Satan’s fiery darts alone, Quenched on his shield, at him are hurled; The traitor in his heart is known, And the dire friendship of this world. Undaunted to the field he goes; Yet vain were skill and valor there, Unless, to foil his legion foes, He takes the trustiest weapon: prayer. With this omnipotence he moves, From this the alien armies flee, Till more than conqueror he proves, Through Christ, who gives him victory. Thus, strong in his Redeemer’s strength, Sin, death, and hell he tramples down; Fights the good fight, and wins at length, Through mercy, an immortal crown.

  Truehearted, wholehearted, faithful and loyal, King of our lives, by Thy grace we will be; Under the standard exalted and royal, Strong in Thy strength we will battle for Thee. Refrain Peal out the watchword! Silence it never! Song of our spirits, rejoicing and free; Peal out the watchword! Loyal forever! King of our lives, by Thy grace we will be. Wholehearted!
