12:1 Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, ²  by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice – alive, holy, and pleasing to God ³  – which is your reasonable service.

1 Peter 3:9

3:9 Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but instead bless ⁴  others ⁵  because you were called to inherit a blessing.

[12:1]  ³ tn The participle and two adjectives “alive, holy, and pleasing to God” are taken as predicates in relation to “sacrifice,” making the exhortation more emphatic. See ExSyn 618-19.

[3:9]  ³ tn Grk “not returning…but blessing,” continuing the sense of command from the preceding.

[3:9]  ⁴ tn The direct object “others” is omitted but implied in Greek, and must be supplied to suit English style.
