Kota kecil, sekitar 8 km di sebelah selatan Yerusalem. Kota ini telah berdiri sekitar 1250 sM, dan sering disebut dalam PL, terutama di dalam hubungannya dengan Raja *Daud, tempat *Rut, neneknya, tinggal (Rut 1:19; 4:11), dan tempat Daud sendiri dilahirkan (1Sam. 17:12). Dalam Mikha (5:2) terdapat nubuat bahwa keberuntungan *Yehuda yang akan diperbarui melalui seorang raja Israel yang dilahirkan di Betlehem, rumah Daud. Ayat ini diambil oleh umat Kristen sebagai nubuat tentang kelahiran Yesus, *Mesias, yang digambarkan dalam Injil-injil (Mat. 2:1; Luk 2:4; Yoh. 7:42) sebagai yang dilahirkan di Betlehem, tanah *Yudea, meskipun kota asalnya adalah *Nazaret (Luk. 4:16). Namun demikian, secara historis alasan yang diberikan untuk kelahiran Yesus di Betlehem tidak meyakinkan. Tampaknya cerita itu disusun untuk membenarkan Mi. 5:2 dan 2Sam. 5:2. (bet lekhem, 'rumah roti', kata yg terakhir mungkin artinya lebih luas, 'makanan'). Ada yg menyarankan lekhem adalah Lakhmu, dewa Asyur, tapi tidak ada bukti bahwa dewa ini pernah disembah di Palestina. Ada dua kota dengan nama ini dalam PL dan yg sekarang disebut dengan nama Arab Bayt Lahm, sama dengan namanya dalam bh Ibrani.

Kaisar Romawi Hadrianus merusak kota itu pada abad 2 M, orang Yahudi diusir, dan tempat kelahiran Yesus hilang selama dua abad; pertapakan 'Gereja Kelahiran' yg dibangun oleh Helena pada zaman pemerintahan Konstantinus mungkin (tapi juga tidak mungkin) menjadi tempat yg sebenarnya.

2. Betlehem lainnya terletak di daerah milik Zebulon (Yos 19:15), 11 km barat laut Nazaret. Kebanyakan ahli menganggap bahwa hakim Ebzan (Hak 12:8) tinggal di situ, tapi tradisi kuno lebih menganggap Betlehem Yehuda.
