• [Mzm 19:4] I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art

  I greet Thee, who my sure Redeemer art, My only trust and Savior of my heart, Who pain didst undergo for my poor sake; I pray Thee from our hearts all cares to take. Thou art the King of mercy and of grace, Reigning omnipotent in every place; So come, O King, and our whole being sway; Shine on us with the light of Thy pure day. Thou art the life, by which alone we live, And all our substance and our strength receive; Sustain us by Thy faith and by Thy power, And give us strength in every trying hour. Thou hast the true and perfect gentleness, No harshness hast Thou and no bitterness; O grant to us the grace we find in Thee, That we may dwell in perfect unity. Our hope is in no other save in Thee; Our faith is built upon Thy promise free; Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure, That in Thy strength we evermore endure.

  All nature’s works His praise declare, to Whom they all belong; There is a voice in every star, in every breeze a song. Sweet music fills the world abroad with strains of love and power; The stormy sea sings praise to God, the thunder and the shower. To God the tribes of ocean cry, and birds upon the wing; To God the powers that dwell on high their tuneful tribute bring. Like them, let us the throne surround, with them loud chorus raise, While instruments of loftier sound assist our feeble praise. Great God, to Thee we consecrate our voices and our skill; We bid the pealing organ wait to speak alone Thy will. Lord, while the music round us floats may earth born passions die; O grant its rich and swelling notes may lift our souls on high!

  Behold, the lofty sky Declares its Maker God. And all His starry works on high Proclaim His power abroad. The darkness and the light Still keep their course the same; While night to day, and day to night, Divinely teach His Name. In every different land, Their general voice is known; They show the wonders of His Hand, And orders of His throne. Ye Christian hearts, rejoice, [originally, Ye British lands, rejoice] Here He reveals His Word; We are not left to nature’s voice To bid us know the Lord. His statutes and commands Are set before our eyes; He puts His Gospel in our hands, Where our salvation lies. His laws are just and pure, His truth without deceit, His promises for ever sure And His rewards are great.   The duteous day now closeth, Each flower and tree reposeth, Shade creeps o’er wild and wood: Let us, as night is falling, On God our Maker calling, Give thanks to Him, the Giver good. Now all the heav’nly splendor Breaks forth in starlight tender From myriad worlds unknown; And man, the marvel seeing, Forgets his selfish being, For joy of beauty not his own.   Father, how wide Thy glories shine! How high Thy wonders rise! Known through the earth by thousand signs, By thousand through the skies. Those mighty orbs proclaim Thy power, Their motions speak Thy skill, And on the wings of every hour We read Thy patience still. But when we view Thy strange design To save rebellious worms, Our souls are filled with awe divine To see what God performs. Our thoughts are lost in reverent awe; We love and we adore; The first archangel never saw So much of God before. Part of Thy Name divinely stands On all Thy creatures writ; They show the labor of Thy hands, Or impress of Thy feet. When sinners break the Father’s laws, The dying Son atones; O the dear mysteries of His cross, The triumph of his groans.   O God the deep immutable, the changeless, wise and still, You’re the absolute, eternal One; You wield the sovereign will. Deep Heav’n itself and even time must bend beneath your sway. With a whispered thought you banish night in a flash of blinding day. The seas are boundaried by your word; great mountains heed your call. Majestic swirls of galaxies adorn your royal hall. The centuries are lumps of clay shaped by your strength and skill. You mold the long millennia to the dictates of your will. The boundless, black-robed skies proclaim your vast, astonishing might: Their flaming jewels rejoice for you in silent shouts of light. With sure and sovereign strokes your hands finger the cosmic strings, And play celestial symphonies as all creation sings. And silent now, the angels stare; stunned seraphs blush, amazed; Great Michael sheaths the sword that at the Gate of Eden blazed. Mighty Gabriel sets his trump aside, and listens to his Lord, As Love incomprehensible enfleshes the Living Word. Now space and time have cracked before the size of this event: The Godhead shudders as the glorious Son to Hell is sent. • [Mzm 19:1] In Righteous Glory Reigning

  In righteous glory reigning, our God sits high enthroned, His right and truth maintaining, His justice making known. He stands above Time’s river, the worlds within His view, His right hand will deliver to every man his due. Before His bar no pleading excuses any flaw; But wickedness exceeding ignites the flames of Law. ’Mid Sinai’s sounding thunder the verdict has been read: All men, in awestruck wonder, fall down before Him, dead. Such wrath, beyond all telling! Can it be turned aside? Is there a strong, safe dwelling where Hell can be denied? Can holy, perfect righteousness forgive and reconcile? Can God, though angered, still bless the wicked and the vile? Yes, yes, my soul has found out! There is a mercy sure! A sovereign grace to sound out—a love both true and pure! The flesh of God is given to meet the Law’s demands, And now I am forgiven, while Christ in Heaven stands! With that propitiation, God and His saints embrace! That perfect expiation has saved His chosen race! Now mercy kisses justice; now Truth and Love join hands, Now Him in Whom our trust is: The Christ, our surety stands!

  Nature with open volume stands, To spread her Maker’s praise abroad; And every labor of His hands Shows something worthy of a God.   There is a Book that all may read, [or There is a Book, who runs may read,] Which heav’nly truth imparts, And all the lore its scholars need, Pure eyes and Christian hearts. The works of God above, below, Within us and around, Are pages in that Book, to show How God Himself is found. The glorious sky, embracing all, Is like the Maker’s love, Wherewith encompassed, great and small In peace and order move. The moon above, the Church below, A wondrous race they run; But each their radiance, all their glow, Each borrows of its Sun. The Savior lends the light and heat That crown His holy hill; The saints, like stars, around His seat Perform their courses still. The saints above are stars in Heaven— What are the saints on earth? The dew of Heav’n is like Thy grace, It steals in silence down; But where it lights, the favored place By richest fruits is known.   To God, the universal King, Let all mankind their tribute bring; All that have breath! your voices raise, In songs of never ending praise. The spacious earth on which we tread, And wider heavens stretched o’er our head, A large and solemn temple frame, To celebrate its Builder’s fame. Here the bright sun, that rules the day, As through the sky he makes his way, To all the world proclaims aloud The boundless sovereignty of God. When from his courts the sun retires, And with the day his voice expires, The moon and stars adopt the song, And through the night the praise prolong. • [Mzm 10:1] O Why So Far Removed

  O why so far removed, O Lord, And why so distant be; Why hidest Thou Thy face from us In our anxiety? The wicked in unholy pride The lowly poor oppress; Let them be taken in the snare Of their own craftiness. The wicked in his arrogance Refuses God to fear, Nor is it in his thoughts at all The sovereign God to hear. His ways are grievous and Thy laws Too high for him to see; He therefore his defiance bids, And taunts his enemy. For he within his heart has said, I suffer no distress, Adversity comes not to me, I still have had success. In cursing and deceit and fraud His tongue is ever skilled; With festering iniquity His mouth is ever filled. He lurks in village hiding place, And in dark corners bent, He watches for the humble poor, To seize the innocent. In stealth he cowers covertly As lion in his lair, That he may pounce upon the poor, And catch him in his snare. He crouches low so that the poor To his strong friends may fall, And tells himself that God forgets Or sees it not at all. Arise, O Lord, and lift Thy hand, The poor in memory keep. How can the wicked blaspheme God And say He is asleep? For surely Thou dost see, O Lord, Dost see the sin and spite; And when the helpless look to Thee Thou dost their wrong requite. Break Thou the force of evil men, Befriend the fatherless, Trace out the wicked everywhere, Uproot their wickedness. The Lord our God is sovereign still, The heathen all are slain. Thou, Lord, hast heard the suppliant’s prayer And dost his heart sustain.   Wherefore is it that Thou, O Lord, Dost stand from us afar? And wherefore hidest Thou Thyself, When times so troublous are? The wicked in his loftiness Doth persecute the poor: In these devices they have fram’d Let them be taken sure. The wicked of his heart’s desire Doth talk with boasting great; He blesseth him that’s covetous, Whom yet the Lord doth hate. The wicked, through his pride of face, On God he doth not call; And in the counsels of his heart The Lord is not at all. His ways they always grievous are; Thy judgments from his sight Removèd are: at all his foes He puffeth with despight. Within his heart he thus hath said, I shall not movèd be; And no adversity at all Shall ever come to me. His mouth with cursing, fraud, deceit, Is fill’d abundantly; And underneath his tongue there is Mischief and vanity.
