Nehemia 11:1

The Population of Jerusalem

11:1 So the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, ¹  while the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to settle in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine ²  remained in other cities.

Yesaya 1:26

1:26 I will reestablish honest judges as in former times,

wise advisers as in earlier days. ³ 

Then you will be called, ‘The Just City,

Faithful Town.’”

4:5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, ⁴  had him stand ⁵  on the highest point ⁶  of the temple,

[11:1]  ² tn Heb “nine of the hands.” The word “hand” is used here in the sense or a part or portion.

[1:26]  ³ tn Heb “I will restore your judges as in the beginning; and your counselors as in the beginning.” In this context, where social injustice and legal corruption are denounced (see v. 23), the “judges” are probably government officials responsible for making legal decisions, while the “advisers” are probably officials who helped the king establish policies. Both offices are also mentioned in 3:2.

[4:5]  ⁴ sn The order of the second and third temptations differs in Luke’s account (4:5-12) from the order given in Matthew.

[4:5]  ⁵ tn Grk “and he stood him.”

[4:5]  ⁶ sn The highest point of the temple probably refers to the point on the temple’s southeast corner where it looms directly over a cliff some 450 ft (135 m) high. However, some have suggested the reference could be to the temple’s high gate.
