[4:31]  1 tn Heb “to meet him.”

[5:5]  2 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Naaman) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[5:5]  3 tn The Hebrew term כִּכָּר (kikkar, “circle”) refers generally to something that is round. When used of metals it can refer to a disk-shaped weight made of the metal or to a standard unit of weight, generally regarded as a talent. Since the accepted weight for a talent of metal is about 75 pounds, this would have amounted to about 750 pounds of silver (cf. NCV, NLT, CEV).

[5:5]  4 tn Heb “six thousand gold […].” The unit of measure is not given in the Hebrew text. A number of English versions supply “pieces” (e.g., KJV, ASV, NAB, TEV) or “shekels” (e.g., NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[5:7]  5 tn Heb “Am I God, killing and restoring life, that this one sends to me to cure a man from his skin disease?” In the Hebrew text this is one lengthy rhetorical question, which has been divided up in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[5:7]  6 tn Heb “Indeed, know and see that he is seeking an occasion with respect to me.”

[5:26]  7 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Elisha) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[5:26]  8 tn Heb “Did not my heart go as a man turned from his chariot to meet you?” The rhetorical question emphasizes that he was indeed present in “heart” (or “spirit”) and was very much aware of what Gehazi had done. In the MT the interrogative particle has been accidentally omitted before the negative particle.

[5:26]  9 tn In the MT the statement is phrased as a rhetorical question, “Is this the time…?” It expects an emphatic negative response.

[9:6]  10 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jehu) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:6]  11 tn Heb “he”; the referent (the prophet) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:17]  12 tn Heb “the quantity [of the men] of Jehu, when he approached.” Elsewhere שִׁפְעַה (shifah), “quantity,” is used of a quantity of camels (Isa 60:6) or horses (Ezek 26:10) and of an abundance of water (Job 22:11; 38:34).

[9:17]  13 tn The term שִׁפְעַת (shifat) appears to be a construct form of the noun, but no genitive follows.

[9:17]  14 tn Heb “said.”

[9:17]  15 tn Heb “Get a rider and send [him] to meet him and let him ask, ‘Is there peace?’”

[10:24]  16 tn Heb “The man who escapes from the men whom I am bringing into your hands, [it will be] his life in place of his life.”

[11:18]  17 tn Or “tore down.”

[11:18]  18 tn Or “images.”

[11:18]  19 tn The Hebrew construction translated “smashed…to bits” is emphatic. The adverbial infinitive absolute (הֵיטֵב [hetev], “well”) accompanying the Piel form of the verb שָׁבַר (shavar), “break,” suggests thorough demolition.

[11:18]  20 tn Heb “the priest.” Jehoiada’s name is added for clarification.

[13:19]  21 tn Heb “man of God.”

[13:19]  22 tn Heb “[It was necessary] to strike five or six times, then you would strike down Syria until destruction.” On the syntax of the infinitive construct, see GKC 349 §114.k.

[13:23]  23 tn Or “showed them compassion.”

[13:23]  24 tn Heb “he turned to them.”

[13:23]  25 tn Heb “because of his covenant with.”

[13:23]  26 tn Heb “until now.”

[14:6]  27 tn Heb “as it is written in the scroll of the law of Moses which the Lord commanded, saying.”

[14:6]  28 tn Heb “on account of sons.”

[14:6]  29 tn Heb “on account of fathers.”

[14:6]  30 sn This law is recorded in Deut 24:16.

[17:35]  31 tn Or “covenant.”

[17:35]  32 sn That is, the descendants of Jacob/Israel (see v. 35b).

[18:27]  33 tn Heb “To your master and to you did my master send me to speak these words?” The rhetorical question expects a negative answer.

[18:27]  34 tn Heb “[Is it] not [also] to the men…?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “Yes, it is.”

[18:27]  sn The chief adviser alludes to the horrible reality of siege warfare, when the starving people in the besieged city would resort to eating and drinking anything to stay alive.

[18:31]  35 tn Heb “make with me a blessing and come out to me.”

[19:29]  36 tn At this point the word concerning the king of Assyria (vv. 21-28) ends and the Lord again directly addresses Hezekiah and the people (see v. 20).

[19:29]  37 tn Heb “and this is your sign.” In this case the אוֹת (’ot), “sign,” is a future confirmation of God’s intervention designated before the actual intervention takes place. For similar “signs” see Exod 3:12 and Isa 7:14-25.

[19:29]  38 sn This refers to crops that grew up on their own (that is, without cultivation) from the seed planted in past years.

[19:29]  39 tn Heb “and in the second year.”

[19:29]  40 tn The four plural imperatival verb forms in v. 29b are used rhetorically. The Lord commands the people to plant, harvest, etc. to emphasize the certainty of restored peace and prosperity. See IBHS 572 §34.4.c.

[20:5]  41 tn Heb “on the third day.”

[21:3]  42 sn See the note at 2 Kgs 17:16.

[21:3]  43 tn Or “served.”

[25:17]  44 tn Heb “eighteen cubits.” The standard cubit in the OT is assumed by most authorities to be about eighteen inches (45 cm) long.

[25:17]  45 tn Heb “three cubits.” The parallel passage in Jer 52:22 has “five.”
