[1:10]  1 tn Heb “as the heart of the king was good with the wine.” Here the proper name (King Ahasuerus) has been substituted for the title in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[1:10]  2 tn Heb “King Ahasuerus”; here the proper name has been replaced by the pronoun “him” in the translation for stylistic reasons. Cf. similarly NIV, NCV, CEV, NLT “King Xerxes.”

[2:8]  3 tn Heb “were heard” (so NASB); NRSV “were (had been NIV) proclaimed.”

[2:8]  4 tn Heb “the house of the king.” So also in vv. 9, 13. Cf. NLT “the king’s harem.”

[2:9]  5 tn Heb “was good in his eyes”; NLT “Hegai was very impressed with Esther.”

[2:9]  6 tn Heb “being looked at (with favor).”

[2:9]  7 tn Heb “of the house of the women” (so KJV, ASV). So also in vv. 11, 13, 14.

[2:21]  8 tn This individual is referred to as “Bigthana,” a variant spelling of the name, in Esth 6:2.

[2:21]  9 tc The LXX does not include the names “Bigthan and Teresh” here.

[2:21]  10 tn Heb “guarders of the threshold”; NIV “who guarded the doorway.”

[2:21]  11 tn Heb “sought to send a hand against”; CEV “decided to kill.”

[4:1]  12 tn Heb “Mordecai.” The pronoun (“he”) was used in the translation for stylistic reasons. A repetition of the proper name here is redundant in terms of contemporary English style.

[4:1]  13 tn Heb “great.”

[7:9]  14 sn Cf. 1:10, where Harbona is one of the seven eunuchs sent by the king to summon Queen Vashti to his banquet.

[7:9]  15 tn Heb “fifty cubits.” See the note on this expression in Esth 5:14.

[8:7]  16 tn Heb “sent forth his hand”; NAB, NIV “attacked”; NLT “tried to destroy.” Cf. 9:2.
