[5:15]  1 tn Or “the Jewish authorities”; Grk “the Jews.” See the note on the phrase “Jewish leaders” in v. 10.

[5:27]  2 tn Grk “him.”

[5:27]  3 tn Grk “authority to judge.”

[6:33]  4 tn Or “he who.”

[6:34]  5 tn Or “Lord.” The Greek κύριος (kurios) means both “Sir” and “Lord.” In this passage it is not at all clear at this point that the crowd is acknowledging Jesus as Lord. More likely this is simply a form of polite address (“sir”).

[13:24]  6 sn It is not clear where Simon Peter was seated. If he were on Jesus’ other side, it is difficult to see why he would not have asked the question himself. It would also have been difficult to beckon to the beloved disciple, on Jesus’ right, from such a position. So apparently Peter was seated somewhere else. It is entirely possible that Judas was seated to Jesus’ left. Matt 26:25 seems to indicate that Jesus could speak to him without being overheard by the rest of the group. Judas is evidently in a position where Jesus can hand him the morsel of food (13:26).

[13:24]  7 tn Grk “to this one”; the referent (the beloved disciple) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[13:24]  8 tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[13:24]  9 sn That is, who would betray him (v. 21).

[14:15]  10 tn Or “will keep.”

[14:15]  11 sn Jesus’ statement If you love me, you will obey my commandments provides the transition between the promises of answered prayer which Jesus makes to his disciples in vv. 13-14 and the promise of the Holy Spirit which is introduced in v. 16. Obedience is the proof of genuine love.

[15:17]  12 tn Grk “These things.”

[17:7]  13 tn Or “they have come to know,” or “they have learned.”

[17:7]  14 tn Grk “all things.”
