• [Yoh 3:5] Awaked By Sinai’s Awful Sound

  Awaked by Sinai’s awful sound, My soul in bonds of guilt I found, And knew not where to go; Eternal truth did loud proclaim, “The sinner must be born again, Or sink to endless woe.” Amazed I stood, but could not tell Which way to shun the gates of hell, For death and hell drew near; I strove, indeed, but strove in vain; “The sinner must be born again” Still sounded in my ear. When to the law I trembling fled, It poured its curses on my head; I no relief could find. This fearful truth increased my pain; “The sinner must be born again” O’erwhelmed my tortured mind. The saints I heard with rapture tell How Jesus conquered death and hell, And broke the fowler’s snare; Yet when I found this truth remain, “The sinner must be born again,” I sank in deep despair. But while I thus in anguish lay, The gracious Savior passed this way, And felt His pity move; The sinner, by His justice slain, Now by His grace is born again; And sings redeeming love.

  Blessèd Jesus! here we stand, Met to do as Thou hast spoken; And this child, at Thy command, Now we bring to Thee, in token That to Christ it here is given; For of such shall be his heaven. Yes! Thy warning voice is plain, And we fain would keep it duly: He who is not born again, Heart and life renewing truly, Born of water and the Spirit, Will God’s kingdom ne’er inherit. Make it, Head, Thy member now; Shepherd, take Thy lamb and feed it; Prince of Peace, its peace be Thou; Way of Life, to Heaven, O lead it: Vine, this branch may nothing sever, Grafted firm in Thee for ever. Now upon Thy heart it lies, What our hearts so dearly treasure; Heavenward lead our burdened sighs, Pour Thy blessing without measure; Write the name we now have given, Write it in the book of Heaven.

  A ruler once came to Jesus by night To ask Him the way of salvation and light; The Master made answer in words true and plain, “Ye must be born again.” Refrain “Ye must be born again, Ye must be born again, I verily, verily, say unto thee, Ye must be born again.” Ye children of men, attend to the Word, So solemnly uttered by Jesus the Lord; And let not this message to you be in vain, “Ye must be born again.” Refrain O ye who would enter that glorious rest, And sing with the ransomed the song of the blest, The life everlasting if ye would obtain, “Ye must be born again.” Refrain A dear one in Heaven thy heart yearns to see, At the beautiful gate may be watching for thee, Then list to the note of this solemn refrain, “Ye must be born again.” Refrain

  How vain the cruel Herod’s fear, When told that Christ the King is near! He takes not earthly realms away, Who gives the realms that ne’er decay. The Eastern sages saw from far And followed on His guiding star; By light their way to Light they trod, And by their gifts confessed their God. Within the Jordan’s sacred flood The heavenly Lamb in meekness stood, That He to Whom no sin was known, Might cleanse His people from their own. And oh, what miracle divine, When water reddened into wine! He spake the word, and forth it flowed In streams that nature ne’er bestowed. All glory, Jesu, be to Thee For this Thy glad Epiphany: Whom with the Father we adore And Holy Ghost forevermore.

  When Christ’s appearing was made known, King Herod trembled for his throne; But He Who offers heavenly birth Sought not the kingdom of this earth. • [Yoh 18:36] Why, Herod, Unrelenting Foe

  Why, Herod, unrelenting foe, Doth the Lord’s coming move thee so? He doth no earthly kingdom seek Who brings His kingdom to the meek. Led by the star, the wise men find The Light that lightens all mankind; The threefold presents which they bring Declare Him God, and Man, and King. In Jordan’s sacred waters stood The meek and heavenly Lamb of God, And He who did no sin, thereby Cleansed us from all iniquity! And now a miracle was done: Six water pots stood there of stone; Christ spake the word with power divine, The water reddened into wine. All honor unto Christ be paid, Pure offspring of the holy maid, With Father and with Holy Ghost, Till time in endless time be lost.

• [Yoh 18:36] Why, Impious Herod, Shouldst Thou Fear

  Why, impious Herod, shouldst thou fear Because the Christ is come so near? He Who doth heavenly kingdoms grant Thine earthly realm can never want. Lo, sages from the East are gone To where the star hath newly shone: Led on by light to Light they press, And by their gifts their God confess. The Lamb of God is manifest Again in Jordan’s water blest, And He Who sin had never known By washing hath our sins undone. Yet He that ruleth everything Can change the nature of the spring, And gives at Cana this for sign— The water reddens into wine. Then glory, Lord, to Thee we pay For thine Epiphany today; All glory through eternity To Father, Son, and Spirit be.
