Yesaya 8:7

8:7 So look, the sovereign master 1  is bringing up against them the turbulent and mighty waters of the Euphrates River 2  – the king of Assyria and all his majestic power. It will reach flood stage and overflow its banks. 3

Yesaya 13:13

Konteks

Yesaya 14:16

Konteks

14:16 Those who see you stare at you,

they look at you carefully, thinking: 7

the one who made kingdoms tremble?

Yesaya 17:10

Konteks

17:10 For you ignore 8  the God who rescues you;

you pay no attention to your strong protector. 9

So this is what happens:

You cultivate beautiful plants

and plant exotic vines. 10

Yesaya 19:14

Konteks

19:14 The Lord has made them undiscerning; 11

Yesaya 24:16

Konteks

24:16 From the ends of the earth we 13  hear songs –

the Just One is majestic. 14

But I 15  say, “I’m wasting away! I’m wasting away! I’m doomed!

Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!” 16

Yesaya 25:2

Konteks

25:2 Indeed, 17  you have made the city 18  into a heap of rubble,

the fortified town into a heap of ruins;

the fortress of foreigners 19  is no longer a city,

it will never be rebuilt.

Yesaya 34:15

Konteks

34:15 Owls 20  will make nests and lay eggs 21  there;

so they will pay attention and understand

that the Lord’s power 30  has accomplished this,

and that the Holy One of Israel has brought it into being.” 31

Yesaya 44:9

Konteks

44:9 All who form idols are nothing;

Their witnesses cannot see;

they recognize nothing, so they are put to shame.

Yesaya 44:11-12

Konteks

44:11 Look, all his associates 32  will be put to shame;

the craftsmen are mere humans. 33

Let them all assemble and take their stand!

They will panic and be put to shame.

44:12 A blacksmith works with his tool 34

and forges metal over the coals.

He forms it 35  with hammers;

he makes it with his strong arm.

He gets hungry and loses his energy; 36

he drinks no water and gets tired.

[8:7]  1 tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

[8:7]  2 tn Heb “the mighty and abundant waters of the river.” The referent of “the river” here, the Euphrates River, has been specified in the translation for clarity. As the immediately following words indicate, these waters symbolize the Assyrian king and his armies which will, as it were, inundate the land.

[8:7]  3 tn Heb “it will go up over all its stream beds and go over all its banks.”

[13:13]  4 tn Or “the sky.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heavens” or “sky” depending on the context.

[13:13]  5 tn Heb “from its place” (so NAB, NASB, NIV, NCV).

[13:13]  6 tn Heb “and in the day of the raging of his anger.”

[14:16]  7 tn The word “thinking” is supplied in the translation in order to make it clear that the next line records their thoughts as they gaze at him.

[17:10]  8 tn Heb “you have forgotten” (so NAB, NIV, NRSV).

[17:10]  9 tn Heb “and the rocky cliff of your strength you do not remember.”

[17:10]  10 tn Heb “a vine, a strange one.” The substantival adjective זָר (zar) functions here as an appositional genitive. It could refer to a cultic plant of some type, associated with a pagan rite. But it is more likely that it refers to an exotic, or imported, type of vine, one that is foreign (i.e., “strange”) to Israel.

[19:14]  11 tn Heb “the Lord has mixed into her midst a spirit of blindness.”

[19:14]  12 tn Heb “like the going astray of a drunkard in his vomit.”

[24:16]  13 sn The identity of the subject is unclear. Apparently in vv. 15-16a an unidentified group responds to the praise they hear in the west by exhorting others to participate.

[24:16]  14 tn Heb “Beauty belongs to the just one.” These words may summarize the main theme of the songs mentioned in the preceding line.

[24:16]  15 sn The prophet seems to contradict what he hears the group saying. Their words are premature because more destruction is coming.

[24:16]  16 tn Heb “and [with] deception deceivers deceive.”

[24:16]  tn Verse 16b is a classic example of Hebrew wordplay. In the first line (“I’m wasting away…”) four consecutive words end with hireq yod ( ִי); in the second line all forms are derived from the root בָּגַד (bagad). The repetition of sound draws attention to the prophet’s lament.

[25:2]  17 tn Or “For” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NRSV).

[25:2]  18 tn The Hebrew text has “you have made from the city.” The prefixed mem (מ) on עִיר (’ir, “city”) was probably originally an enclitic mem suffixed to the preceding verb. See J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:456, n. 3.

[25:2]  19 tc Some with support from the LXX emend זָרִים (zarim, “foreigners”) to זֵדִים (zedim, “the insolent”).

[34:15]  20 tn Hebrew קִפּוֹז (qippoz) occurs only here; the precise meaning of the word is uncertain.

[34:15]  21 tn For this proposed meaning for Hebrew מָלַט (malat), see HALOT 589 s.v. I מלט.

[34:15]  22 tn Heb “and brood [over them] in her shadow.”

[34:15]  23 tn The precise meaning of דַּיָּה (dayyah) is uncertain, though the term appears to refer to some type of bird of prey, perhaps a vulture.

[37:7]  24 tn Heb “I will put in him a spirit.” The precise sense of רוּחַ (ruakh, “spirit”) is uncertain in this context. It may refer to a spiritual being who will take control of his mind (see 1 Kgs 22:19), or it could refer to a disposition of concern and fear. In either case the Lord’s sovereignty over the king is apparent.

[37:7]  25 tn Heb “cause him to fall” (so KJV, ASV, NAB), that is, “kill him.”

[38:8]  26 tn Heb “the shadow on the steps which [the sun] had gone down, on the steps of Ahaz, with the sun, back ten steps.”

[38:8]  sn These steps probably functioned as a type of sundial. See HALOT 614 s.v. מַעֲלָה and M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 256.

[38:8]  27 tn Heb “and the sun returned ten steps on the steps which it had gone down.”

[41:20]  28 tn The words “I will do this” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The Hebrew text has here simply, “in order that.”

[41:20]  29 tn Heb “they”; NAB, NRSV “that all may see”; CEV, NLT “Everyone will see.”

[41:20]  30 tn Heb “hand” (so KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[41:20]  31 tn Or “created it” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV); TEV “has made it happen.”

[44:11]  32 tn The pronoun “his” probably refers to the one who forms/casts an idol (v. 10), in which case it refers to the craftsman’s associates in the idol-manufacturing guild.

[44:11]  33 sn The point seems to be this: If the idols are the mere products of human hands, then those who trust in them will be disappointed, for man-made gods are incapable of helping their “creators.”

[44:12]  34 tn The noun מַעֲצָד (maatsad), which refers to some type of tool used for cutting, occurs only here and in Jer 10:3. See HALOT 615 s.v. מַעֲצָד.

[44:12]  35 tn Some English versions take the pronoun “it” to refer to an idol being fashioned by the blacksmith (cf. NIV, NCV, CEV). NLT understands the referent to be “a sharp tool,” which is then used by the carpenter in the following verse to carve an idol from wood.

[44:12]  36 tn Heb “and there is no strength”; NASB “his strength fails.”
