Yesaya 8:7

8:7 So look, the sovereign master ¹  is bringing up against them the turbulent and mighty waters of the Euphrates River ²  – the king of Assyria and all his majestic power. It will reach flood stage and overflow its banks. ³

Yesaya 41:20

41:20 I will do this so ²⁸  people ²⁹  will observe and recognize,

that the Lord’s power ³⁰  has accomplished this,

Yesaya 44:9

44:9 All who form idols are nothing;

the things in which they delight are worthless.

Their witnesses cannot see;

they recognize nothing, so they are put to shame.

Yesaya 44:11-12

44:11 Look, all his associates ³²  will be put to shame;

the craftsmen are mere humans. ³³ 

Let them all assemble and take their stand!

They will panic and be put to shame.

44:12 A blacksmith works with his tool ³⁴ 

and forges metal over the coals.

He forms it ³⁵  with hammers;

he makes it with his strong arm.

He gets hungry and loses his energy; ³⁶ 

he drinks no water and gets tired.

As the immediately following words indicate, these waters symbolize the Assyrian king and his armies which will, as it were, inundate the land.

[13:13]  ⁴ tn Or “the sky.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heavens” or “sky” depending on the context.

[24:16]  ¹³ sn The identity of the subject is unclear. Apparently in vv. 15-16a an unidentified group responds to the praise they hear in the west by exhorting others to participate.
