Yehezkiel 1:9

Konteks
1:9 their wings touched each other; they did not turn as they moved, but went straight ahead. 1

Yehezkiel 4:6

Konteks

4:6 “When you have completed these days, then lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah 40 days 2  – I have assigned one day for each year.

Yehezkiel 12:2

Konteks
12:2 “Son of man, you are living in the midst of a rebellious house. 3  They have eyes to see, but do not see, and ears to hear, but do not hear, 4  because they are a rebellious house.

Yehezkiel 12:4

Konteks
12:4 Bring out your belongings packed for exile during the day while they are watching. And go out at evening, while they are watching, as if for exile.

Yehezkiel 15:5

Konteks
15:5 Indeed! If it was not made into anything useful when it was whole, how much less can it be made into anything when the fire has burned it up and it is charred?

Yehezkiel 15:7

Konteks
15:7 I will set 5  my face against them – although they have escaped from the fire, 6  the fire will still consume them! Then you will know that I am the Lord, when I set my face against them.

Yehezkiel 16:51

Konteks
16:51 Samaria has not committed half the sins you have; you have done more abominable deeds than they did. 7  You have made your sisters appear righteous with all the abominable things you have done.

Yehezkiel 19:9

Konteks

19:9 They put him in a collar with hooks; 8

they brought him to the king of Babylon;

they brought him to prison 9

so that his voice would not be heard

any longer on the mountains of Israel.

Yehezkiel 20:26

Konteks
20:26 I declared them to be defiled because of their sacrifices 10  – they caused all their first born to pass through the fire 11  – so that I would devastate them, so that they will know that I am the Lord.’ 12

Yehezkiel 20:30

Konteks

20:30 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers 13  and engage in prostitution with detestable idols?

Yehezkiel 21:27

Konteks

21:27 A total ruin I will make it! 14

It will come to an end

when the one arrives to whom I have assigned judgment.’ 15

Yehezkiel 26:3

Konteks
26:3 therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: Look, 16  I am against you, 17  O Tyre! I will bring up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves.

Yehezkiel 28:19

Konteks

28:19 All who know you among the peoples are shocked at you;

you have become terrified and will be no more.’”

Yehezkiel 29:16

Konteks
29:16 It will never again be Israel’s source of confidence, but a reminder of how they sinned by turning to Egypt for help. 18  Then they will know that I am the sovereign Lord.’”

Yehezkiel 32:3

Konteks

32:3 “‘This is what the sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will throw my net over you 19  in the assembly of many peoples;

and they will haul you up in my dragnet.

Yehezkiel 34:20

Konteks

34:20 “‘Therefore, this is what the sovereign Lord says to them: Look, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.

Yehezkiel 36:34

Konteks
36:34 The desolate land will be plowed, instead of being desolate in the sight of everyone who passes by.

Yehezkiel 36:37

Konteks

36:37 “This is what the sovereign Lord says: I will allow the house of Israel to ask me to do this for them: 20  I will multiply their people like sheep. 21

Yehezkiel 40:28

Konteks

40:28 Then he brought me to the inner court by the south gate. He measured the south gate; it had the same dimensions as the others.

Yehezkiel 44:10

Konteks

44:10 “‘But the Levites who went far from me, straying off from me after their idols when Israel went astray, will be responsible for 22  their sin.

Yehezkiel 44:22

Konteks
44:22 They must not marry a widow or a divorcee, but they may marry a virgin from the house of Israel 23  or a widow who is a priest’s widow.

Yehezkiel 44:27-28

Konteks
44:27 On the day he enters the sanctuary, into the inner court to serve in the sanctuary, he must offer his sin offering, declares the sovereign Lord.

44:28 “‘This will be their inheritance: I am their inheritance, and you must give them no property in Israel; I am their property. 24

Yehezkiel 45:13

Konteks

45:13 “‘This is the offering you must offer: a sixth of an ephah from a homer of wheat; a sixth of an ephah from a homer of barley,

Yehezkiel 45:18

Konteks

45:18 “‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: In the first month, on the first day of the month, you must take an unblemished young bull and purify the sanctuary.

Yehezkiel 45:21

Konteks

45:21 “‘In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you will celebrate the Passover, and for seven days bread made without yeast will be eaten.

Yehezkiel 47:5

Konteks
47:5 Again he measured 1,750 feet and it was a river I could not cross, for the water had risen; it was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be crossed.

[1:9]  1 tn Heb “They each went in the direction of one of his faces.”

[4:6]  2 sn The number 40 may refer in general to the period of Judah’s exile using the number of years Israel was punished in the wilderness. In this case, however, one would need to translate, “you will bear the punishment of the house of Judah.”

[12:2]  3 sn The book of Ezekiel frequently refers to the Israelites as a rebellious house (Ezek 2:5, 6, 8; 3:9, 26-27; 12:2-3, 9, 25; 17:12; 24:3).

[12:2]  4 sn This verse is very similar to Isa 6:9-10.

[15:7]  5 tn The word translated “set” is the same Hebrew word translated as “provide” in the previous verse.

[15:7]  6 sn This escape refers to the exile of Ezekiel and others in 597 b.c. (Ezek 1:2; 2 Kgs 24:10-16).

[16:51]  7 tn Or “you have multiplied your abominable deeds beyond them.”

[19:9]  8 tn Or “They put him in a neck stock with hooks.” The noun סּוּגַר (sugar), translated “collar,” occurs only here in the Bible. L. C. Allen and D. I. Block point out a Babylonian cognate that refers to a device for transporting prisoners of war that held them by their necks (D. I. Block, Ezekiel [NICOT], 1:597, n. 35; L. C. Allen, Ezekiel [WBC], 1:284). Based on the Hebrew root, the traditional rendering had been “cage” (cf. ASV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[19:9]  9 tc The term in the MT occurs only here and in Eccl 9:12 where it refers to a net for catching fish. The LXX translates this as “prison,” which assumes a confusion of dalet and resh took place in the MT.

[20:26]  10 tn Or “gifts.”

[20:26]  11 sn This act is prohibited in Deut 12:29-31 and Jer 7:31; 19:5; 32:35. See also 2 Kgs 21:6; 23:10. This custom indicates that the laws the Israelites were following were the disastrous laws of pagan nations (see Ezek 16:20-21).

[20:26]  12 sn God sometimes punishes sin by inciting the sinner to sin even more, as the biblical examples of divine hardening and deceit make clear. See Robert B. Chisholm, Jr., “Divine Hardening in the Old Testament,” BSac 153 (1996): 410-34; idem, “Does God Deceive?” BSac 155 (1998): 11-28. For other instances where the Lord causes individuals to act unwisely or even sinfully as punishment for sin, see 1 Sam 2:25; 2 Sam 17:14; 1 Kgs 12:15; 2 Chr 25:20.

[20:30]  13 tn Heb “in the way of your fathers.”

[21:27]  14 tn Heb “A ruin, a ruin, a ruin I will make it.” The threefold repetition of the noun “ruin” is for emphasis and draws attention to the degree of ruin that would take place. See IBHS 233 §12.5a and GKC 431-32 §133.k. The pronominal suffix (translated “it”) on the verb “make” is feminine in Hebrew. The probable antecedent is the “turban/crown” (both nouns are feminine in form) mentioned in verse 26. The point is that the king’s royal splendor would be completely devastated as judgment overtook his realm and brought his reign to a violent end.

[21:27]  15 tn Heb “Also this, he was not, until the coming of the one to whom the judgment belongs and I have given it.” The Hebrew text, as it stands, is grammatically difficult. The pronoun “this” is feminine, while the following negated verb (“was not”) is masculine. Some emend the verb to a feminine form (see BHS). In this case the statement refers to the destiny of the king’s turban/crown (symbolizing his reign). See the previous note. The preposition translated “when” normally means “until,” but here it seems to refer to the period during which the preceding situation is realized, rather than its termination point. See L. C. Allen, Ezekiel (WBC), 2:19, 21. The second part of the statement, though awkward, probably refers to the arrival of the Babylonian king, to whom the Lord had assigned the task of judgment (see 23:24). Or the verse may read “A total ruin I will make, even this. It will not be until the one comes to whom is (the task of) judgment and I have assigned it.”

[26:3]  16 tn The word הִנֵּה (hinneh, traditionally “behold”) draws attention to something and has been translated here as a verb.

[26:3]  17 tn Or “I challenge you.” The phrase “I am against you” may be a formula for challenging someone to combat or a duel. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 1:201-2, and P. Humbert, “Die Herausforderungsformel ‘h!nn#n' ?l?K>,’” ZAW 45 (1933): 101-8. The Hebrew text switches to a second feminine singular form here, indicating that personified Jerusalem is addressed (see vv. 5-6a). The address to Jerusalem continues through v. 15. In vv. 16-17 the second masculine plural is used, as the people are addressed.

[29:16]  18 tn Heb “reminding of iniquity when they turned after them.”

[32:3]  19 tn The expression “throw my net” is common in Ezekiel (12:13; 17:20; 19:8).

[36:37]  20 tn The Niphal verb may have a tolerative function here, “Again (for) this I will allow myself to be sought by the house of Israel to act for them.” Or it may be reflexive: “I will reveal myself to the house of Israel by doing this also.”

[36:37]  21 sn Heb “I will multiply them like sheep, human(s).”

[44:10]  22 tn Heb “will bear.”

[44:22]  23 tn Heb “from the offspring of the house of Israel.”

[44:28]  24 sn See Num 18:20; Deut 10:9; 18:2; Josh 13:33; 18:7.
