[24:7]  1 tn Heb “lift up your heads.” The gates of the Lord’s dwelling place are here personified. The idiom “lift up the head” often means “be confident, bold” (see Judg 8:28; Job 10:15; Ps 83:2; Zech 1:21).

[24:7]  2 tn Heb “lift yourselves up.”

[24:7]  3 tn Or “king of glory.”

[24:7]  4 tn Following the imperatives of the preceding lines, the prefixed verbal form with vav (ו) conjunctive indicates purpose or result.

[149:2]  5 tn Heb “sons.”

[149:2]  6 sn The Lord is the king here, as the parallelism in the previous line (“their creator”) indicates.

[4:8]  7 tn Heb “Migdal-eder.” Some English versions transliterate this phrase, apparently because they view it as a place name (cf. NAB).

[4:8]  8 sn The city of David, located within Jerusalem, is addressed as Daughter Zion. As the home of the Davidic king, who was Israel’s shepherd (Ps 78:70-72), the royal citadel could be viewed metaphorically as the watchtower of the flock.

[4:8]  9 tn Heb “to you it will come, the former dominion will arrive.”
