[11:5]  ¹ tn Heb “the sons of man.” The phrase is intended in this polemic to portray the builders as mere mortals, not the lesser deities that the Babylonians claimed built the city.

[11:5]  ² tn The Hebrew text simply has בָּנוּ (banu), but since v. 8 says they left off building the city, an ingressive idea (“had started building”) should be understood here.

[11:28]  ³ sn The phrase of the Chaldeans is a later editorial clarification for the readers, designating the location of Ur. From all evidence there would have been no Chaldeans in existence at this early date; they are known in the time of the neo-Babylonian empire in the first millennium b.c.

[11:28]  ⁴ tn Heb “upon the face of Terah his father.”

[19:26]  ⁵ tn Heb “his”; the referent (Lot) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[19:26]  ⁶ tn The Hebrew verb means “to look intently; to gaze” (see 15:5).

[19:26]  sn Longingly. Lot’s wife apparently identified with the doomed city and thereby showed lack of respect for God’s provision of salvation. She, like her daughters later, had allowed her thinking to be influenced by the culture of Sodom.

[32:21]  ⁷ tn Heb “and the gift passed over upon his face.”

[32:21]  ⁸ tn The disjunctive clause is circumstantial/temporal.

[37:16]  ⁹ tn The imperative in this sentence has more of the nuance of a request than a command.

[38:13]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “And it was told to Tamar, saying.”

[38:13]  ¹¹ tn The active participle indicates the action was in progress or about to begin.
