18:1 In those days Israel had no king. And in those days the Danite tribe was looking for a place ¹  to settle, because at that time they did not yet have a place to call their own among the tribes of Israel. ²

19:1 In those days Israel had no king. There was a Levite ³  living temporarily in the remote region of the Ephraimite hill country. He acquired a concubine ⁴  from Bethlehem ⁵  in Judah.

[33:5]  ⁹ tn Heb “he was king.” The present translation avoids the sudden shift in person and the mistaken impression that Moses is the referent by specifying the referent as “the Lord.”

[33:5]  ¹⁰ sn Jeshurun is a term of affection referring to Israel, derived from the Hebrew verb יָשַׁר (yashar, “be upright”). See note on the term in Deut 32:15.

[33:5]  ¹¹ sn The following blessing is given to the tribes in order, although the tribe of Simeon is curiously missing from the list.
