[9:8]  3 tn Or “delighted in.”

[9:8]  4 tn Heb “as king for the Lord your God.”

[9:8]  5 tn Heb “to make him stand permanently.”

[9:8]  6 tn Heb “to do justice and righteousness.”

[9:9]  7 tn The Hebrew word כִּכַּר (kikar, “circle”) refers generally to something that is round. When used of metals it can refer to a disk-shaped weight made of the metal or, by extension, to a standard unit of weight. According to the older (Babylonian) standard the “talent” weighed 130 lbs. (58.9 kg), but later this was lowered to 108.3 lbs. (49.1 kg). More recent research suggests the “light” standard talent was 67.3 lbs. (30.6 kg). Using this as the standard for calculation, the weight of the gold was 8,076 lbs. (3,672 kg).

[9:9]  8 tn Heb “there has not been like those spices which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.”

[9:12]  9 tn Heb “besides what she brought to the king.”

[9:12]  10 tn Heb “turned and went.”

[13:12]  11 tn Heb “and his priests and the trumpets of the war alarm [are ready] to sound out against you.”

[13:12]  12 tn Heb “fathers” (also in v. 18).

[14:13]  13 tn Heb “and there fell from the Cushites so that there was not to them preservation of life.”

[14:13]  14 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the men of Judah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[18:2]  15 tn Heb “at the end of years.”

[18:2]  16 tn The word “visit” is supplied in the translation for clarity and for stylistic reasons.

[18:2]  17 map For location see Map2 B1; Map4 D3; Map5 E2; Map6 A4; Map7 C1.

[18:2]  18 tn Heb “and Ahab slaughtered for him sheep and cattle in abundance, and for the people who were with him.”

[18:2]  19 tn Heb “to go up.”

[18:5]  20 tn Heb “Should we go against Ramoth Gilead for war or should I refrain?”

[18:5]  21 tn Though Jehoshaphat had requested an oracle from “the Lord” (יְהוָה, yÿhvah, “Yahweh”), the Israelite prophets stop short of actually using this name and substitute the title הָאֱלֹהִים (haelohim, “the God”). This ambiguity may explain in part Jehoshaphat’s hesitancy and caution (vv. 7-8). He seems to doubt that the 400 are genuine prophets of the Lord.

[19:2]  22 tn Or “seer.”

[19:2]  23 tn Heb “went out to his face.”

[19:2]  24 tn Heb “and love those who hate the Lord?”

[19:2]  25 tn Heb “and because of this upon you is anger from before the Lord.”

[23:20]  26 tn Heb “took.”

[30:18]  27 tn Heb “without what is written.”

[30:18]  28 tn Heb “make atonement for.”

[32:33]  29 tn Heb “lay down with his fathers.”

[32:33]  30 tn Heb “and honor they did to him in his death, all Judah and the residents of Jerusalem.”
