Yesaya 58:5-7

Konteks

58:5 Is this really the kind of fasting I want? 8

Do I want a day when people merely humble themselves, 9

bowing their heads like a reed

and stretching out 10  on sackcloth and ashes?

Is this really what you call a fast,

a day that is pleasing to the Lord?

58:6 No, this is the kind of fast I want. 11

I want you 12  to remove the sinful chains,

to tear away the ropes of the burdensome yoke,

to set free the oppressed, 13

and to break every burdensome yoke.

58:7 I want you 14  to share your food with the hungry

and to provide shelter for homeless, oppressed people. 15

When you see someone naked, clothe him!

Don’t turn your back on your own flesh and blood! 16

[5:7]  1 tn Heb “Am I God, killing and restoring life, that this one sends to me to cure a man from his skin disease?” In the Hebrew text this is one lengthy rhetorical question, which has been divided up in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[5:7]  2 tn Heb “Indeed, know and see that he is seeking an occasion with respect to me.”

[21:27]  3 tn BDAG 975 s.v. συντελέω 4 has “to come to an end of a duration, come to an end, be overAc 21:27.”

[21:27]  4 tn Grk “Asia”; in the NT this always refers to the Roman province of Asia, made up of about one-third of the west and southwest end of modern Asia Minor. Asia lay to the west of the region of Phrygia and Galatia. The words “the province of” are supplied to indicate to the modern reader that this does not refer to the continent of Asia.

[21:27]  sn Note how there is a sense of Paul being pursued from a distance. These Jews may well have been from Ephesus, since they recognized Trophimus the Ephesian (v. 29).

[21:27]  5 tn Grk “in the temple.” See the note on the word “temple” in v. 28.

[21:27]  6 tn Or “threw the whole crowd into consternation.” L&N 25.221 has “συνέχεον πάντα τὸν ὄχλον ‘they threw the whole crowd into consternation’ Ac 21:27. It is also possible to render the expression in Ac 21:27 as ‘they stirred up the whole crowd.’”

[21:27]  7 tn Grk “and laid hands on.”

[58:5]  8 tn Heb “choose” (so NASB, NRSV); NAB “wish.”

[58:5]  9 tn Heb “a day when man humbles himself.” The words “Do I want” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[58:5]  10 tn Or “making [their] bed.”

[58:6]  11 tn Heb “Is this not a fast I choose?” “No” is supplied in the translation for clarification.

[58:6]  12 tn The words “I want you” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[58:6]  13 tn Heb “crushed.”

[58:7]  14 tn Heb “Is it not?” The rhetorical question here expects a positive answer, “It is!”

[58:7]  15 tn Heb “and afflicted [ones], homeless [ones] you should bring [into] a house.” On the meaning of מְרוּדִים (mÿrudim, “homeless”) see HALOT 633 s.v. *מָרוּד.

[58:7]  16 tn Heb “and from your flesh do not hide yourself.”
