5:6 So now order some cedars of Lebanon to be cut for me. My servants will work with your servants. I will pay your servants whatever you say is appropriate, for you know that we have no one among us who knows how to cut down trees like the Sidonians.”

5:9 My servants will bring the timber down from Lebanon to the sea. I will send it by sea in raft-like bundles to the place you designate. ¹  There I will separate the logs ²  and you can carry them away. In exchange you will supply the food I need for my royal court.” ³ 

5:10 So Hiram supplied the cedars and evergreens Solomon needed, ⁴  5:11 and Solomon supplied Hiram annually with 20,000 cors ⁵  of wheat as provision for his royal court, ⁶  as well as 20,000 baths ⁷  of pure ⁸  olive oil. ⁹

Solomon Secures the Throne

2:12 Solomon sat on his father David’s throne, and his royal authority ¹³  was firmly solidified.

2:13 Haggith’s son Adonijah visited Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. She asked, “Do you come in peace?” He answered, “Yes.” ¹⁴  2:14 He added, ¹⁵  “I have something to say to you.” She replied, “Speak.” 2:15 He said, “You know that the kingdom ¹⁶  was mine and all Israel considered me king. ¹⁷  But then the kingdom was given to my brother, for the Lord decided it should be his. ¹⁸

12:20 Now Herod ²⁰  was having an angry quarrel ²¹  with the people of Tyre ²²  and Sidon. ²³  So they joined together ²⁴  and presented themselves before him. And after convincing ²⁵  Blastus, the king’s personal assistant, ²⁶  to help them, ²⁷  they asked for peace, ²⁸  because their country’s food supply was provided by the king’s country.

The English word “chamberlain” corresponds very closely to this meaning but is not in common use today. The term “personal assistant,” while it might convey more business associations than management of personal affairs, nevertheless communicates the concept well in contemporary English.
