[11:10]  1 tn Or “in that day” (KJV). The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

[11:10]  2 sn See the note at v. 1.

[11:10]  3 tn Heb “ a root from Jesse, which stands for a signal flag of the nations, of him nations will inquire” [or “seek”].

[16:6]  4 tn עֶבְרָה (’evrah) often means “anger, fury,” but here it appears to refer to boastful outbursts or excessive claims. See HALOT 782 s.v. עֶבְרָה.

[16:6]  5 tn Heb “not so his boasting.”

[23:3]  6 tc The Hebrew text (23:2b-3a) reads literally, “merchant of Sidon, the one who crosses the sea, they filled you, and on the deep waters.” Instead of מִלְאוּךְ (milukh, “they filled you”) the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa reads מלאכיך (“your messengers”). The translation assumes an emendation of מִלְאוּךְ to מַלְאָכָו (malakhav, “his messengers”), taking the vav (ו) on וּבְמַיִם (uvÿmayim) as improperly placed; instead it should be the final letter of the preceding word.

[23:3]  7 tn Heb “seed of Shihor.” “Shihor” probably refers to the east branch of the Nile. See Jer 2:18 and BDB 1009 s.v. שִׁיחוֹר.

[23:3]  8 tn Heb “the harvest of the Nile.”

[23:3]  9 tn Heb “[is] her revenue.”

[23:3]  10 tn Heb “merchandise”; KJV, ASV “a mart of nations”; NLT “the merchandise mart of the world.”

[24:13]  11 tn Heb “in the midst of” (so KJV, ASV, NASB).

[24:13]  12 sn The judgment will severely reduce the earth’s population. See v. 6.

[47:5]  13 tn Heb “darkness,” which may indicate a place of hiding where a fugitive would seek shelter and protection.

[47:5]  14 tn Or “For” (NASB, NRSV).

[49:1]  15 tn Or “islands” (NASB, NIV); NLT “in far-off lands.”

[49:1]  sn The Lord’s special servant, introduced in chap. 42, speaks here of his commission.

[49:1]  16 tn Heb “called me from the womb.”

[49:1]  17 tn Heb “from the inner parts of my mother he mentioned my name.”

[51:20]  18 tn Heb “those who are full of the anger of the Lord, the shout [or “rebuke”] of your God.”

[52:10]  19 tn Heb “lays bare”; NLT “will demonstrate.”

[52:10]  20 tn Heb “his holy arm.” This is a metonymy for his power.

[52:10]  21 tn Heb “the remote regions,” which here stand for the extremities and everything in between.

[52:10]  22 tn Heb “the deliverance of our God.” “God” is a subjective genitive here.

[60:16]  23 sn The nations and kings are depicted as a mother nursing her children. Restored Zion will be nourished by them as she receives their wealth as tribute.

[60:16]  24 tn Or “redeemer.” See the note at 41:14.

[60:16]  25 sn See 1:24 and 49:26.

[61:11]  26 tn Or perhaps, “righteousness,” but the context seems to emphasize deliverance and restoration (see v. 10 and 62:1).

[61:11]  27 tn Heb “and praise before all the nations.”
