Lukas 7:6-7

7:6 So ¹  Jesus went with them. When ²  he was not far from the house, the centurion ³  sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, ⁴  for I am not worthy ⁵  to have you come under my roof. 7:7 That is why ⁶  I did not presume ⁷  to come to you. Instead, say the word, and my servant must be healed. ⁸

11:39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” ¹⁰  Martha, the sister of the deceased, ¹¹  replied, “Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, ¹²  because he has been buried ¹³  four days.” ¹⁴

[7:7]  ⁷ tn Grk “I did not consider myself worthy to come to you.” See BDAG 94 s.v. ἀξιόω 1. “Presume” assumes this and expresses the idea in terms of offense.

[7:7]  ⁸ tc The aorist imperative ἰαθήτω (iaqhtw, “must be healed”) is found in Ì^75vid B L 1241 sa. Most mss (א A C D W Θ Ψ Ë^1,13 33 Ï latt bo) have instead a future indicative, ἰαθήσεται (iaqhsetai, “will be healed”). This is most likely an assimilation to Matt 8:8, and thus, as a motivated reading, should be considered secondary. The meaning either way is essentially the same.

[7:7]  tn The aorist imperative may be translated as an imperative of command (“must be healed” or, more periphrastically, “command [my servant] to be healed”) or as a permissive imperative (“let my servant be healed”), which lessens the force of the imperative somewhat in English.

[11:21]  ⁹ tn Grk “Then Martha.” Here οὖν (oun) has not been translated for stylistic reasons.

[11:39]  ¹⁰ tn Or “Remove the stone.”

[11:39]  ¹¹ tn Grk “the sister of the one who had died.”

[11:39]  ¹² tn Grk “already he stinks.”

[11:39]  ¹³ tn Or “been there” (in the tomb – see John 11:17).

[11:39]  ¹⁴ sn He has been buried four days. Although all the details of the miracle itself are not given, those details which are mentioned are important. The statement made by Martha is extremely significant for understanding what actually took place. There is no doubt that Lazarus had really died, because the decomposition of his body had already begun to take place, since he had been dead for four days.
