from Zerah, 1 the family of the Zerahites; and from Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.
It was reported to Saul saying, “David is at Naioth in Ramah.”
Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. When they told Saul about this, it 1 pleased him.
When Saul learned that David had fled to Gath, he did not mount a new search for him.
When the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
When all the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul,
O Lord, do not let me be humiliated, for I call out to you! May evil men be humiliated! May they go wailing to the grave! 1
Now it was reported to Saul, “Look, the army is sinning against the Lord by eating even the blood.” He said, “All of you have broken the covenant! 1 Roll a large stone over here to me.”
This made Saul very angry. The statement displeased him and he thought, 1 “They have attributed to David tens of thousands, but to me they have attributed only thousands. What does he lack, except the kingdom?”
When it was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they prophesied too. So Saul sent messengers a third time, but they also prophesied.
(One of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, who was in charge of Saul’s shepherds.)
Afterward David’s conscience bothered him 1 because he had cut off an edge of Saul’s robe.
David said to Saul, “Why do you pay attention when men say, ‘David is seeking to do you harm’?
David promised Saul this on oath. 1 Then Saul went to his house, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.
