Only four of the 24 priestly families that David organized (1 Chron. 24:7-18) had representatives among the returning exiles. Nevertheless these would have been sufficient to serve the worship needs of the other Israelites who returned. The priests composed about 8.6 percent of the total returnee population (cf. vv. 64-65).
