Yosua 1:7

1:7 Make sure you are ¹  very strong and brave! Carefully obey ²  all the law my servant Moses charged you to keep! ³  Do not swerve from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful ⁴  in all you do. ⁵ 

Yosua 4:8

4:8 The Israelites did just as Joshua commanded. They picked up twelve stones, according to the number of the Israelite tribes, from the middle of the Jordan as the Lord had instructed Joshua. They carried them over with them to the camp and put them there.

Yosua 8:1

Israel Conquers Ai

8:1 The Lord told Joshua, “Don’t be afraid and don’t panic! ⁶  Take the whole army with you and march against Ai! ⁷  See, I am handing over to you ⁸  the king of Ai, along with his people, city, and land.

Yosua 8:20

8:20 When the men of Ai turned around, they saw ⁹  the smoke from the city ascending into the sky and were so shocked they were unable to flee in any direction. ¹⁰  In the meantime the men who were retreating to the desert turned against their pursuers.

Yosua 14:6

14:6 The men of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said about you and me to Moses, the man of God, at Kadesh Barnea. ¹¹ 

Yosua 17:4

17:4 They went before Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord told Moses to assign us land among our relatives.” ¹²  So Joshua ¹³  assigned them land among their uncles, as the Lord had commanded. ¹⁴ 

Yosua 18:7

18:7 But the Levites will not have an allotted portion among you, for their inheritance is to serve the Lord. ¹⁵  Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their allotted land ¹⁶  east of the Jordan which Moses the Lord’s servant assigned them.”

Yosua 22:10

Civil War is Averted

22:10 The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan and built there, near the Jordan, an impressive altar. ¹⁷ 

Yosua 22:17

22:17 The sin we committed at Peor was bad enough. To this very day we have not purified ourselves; it even brought a plague on the community of the Lord. ¹⁸ 

Yosua 22:24

22:24 We swear we have done this because we were worried that ¹⁹  in the future your descendants would say to our descendants, ‘What relationship do you have with the Lord God of Israel? ²⁰ 

Yosua 24:27

24:27 Joshua said to all the people, “Look, this stone will be a witness against you, for it has heard everything the Lord said to us. ²¹  It will be a witness against you if ²²  you deny your God.”

[1:7]  ² tn Heb “so you can be careful to do.” The use of the infinitive לִשְׁמֹר (lishmor, “to keep”) after the imperatives suggests that strength and bravery will be necessary for obedience. Another option is to take the form לִשְׁמֹר as a vocative lamed (ל) with imperative (see Isa 38:20 for an example of this construction), which could be translated, “Indeed, be careful!”

[1:7]  ⁴ tn Heb “be wise,” but the word can mean “be successful” by metonymy.

[8:1]  ⁶ tn Or perhaps “and don’t get discouraged!”

[8:1]  ⁸ tn Heb “I have given into our hand.” The verbal form, a perfect, is probably best understood as a perfect of certitude, indicating the certainty of the action.

[8:20]  ⁹ tn Heb “and they saw, and look.” The Hebrew term הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”) draws attention to the scene and invites the audience to view the events from the perspective of the men of Ai.

[8:20]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “and there was not in them hands to flee here or there.” The Hebrew term יָדַיִם (yadayim, “hands”) is idiomatic for “strength.”

[17:4]  ¹³ tn Heb “he.” The referent is probably Joshua, although Eleazar is mentioned first in the preceding list.

[17:4]  ¹⁴ tn Heb “and he assigned to them in accordance with the mouth [i.e., command] of the Lord an inheritance in the midst of the brothers of their father.”
