[1:15]  1 tn Heb “Then you may return to the land of your possession and possess it, that which Moses, the Lord’s servant, gave to you beyond the Jordan toward the rising of the sun.”

[2:1]  2 tn Heb “Joshua, son of Nun, sent from Shittim two men, spies, secretly, saying.”

[2:1]  3 tn Heb “go, see the land, and Jericho.”

[2:1]  map For location see Map5 B2; Map6 E1; Map7 E1; Map8 E3; Map10 A2; Map11 A1.

[2:1]  4 tn Heb “they went and entered the house of a woman, a prostitute, and her name was Rahab, and they slept there.”

[2:4]  5 tn Heb “The woman took the two men and hid him.” The third masculine singular pronominal suffix on “hid” has to be a scribal error (see GKC §135.p).

[2:4]  6 tn Heb “the men came to me.” See the note on this phrase in v. 3.

[7:5]  7 tn The meaning and correct translation of the Hebrew word שְׁבָרִים (shÿvarim) is uncertain. The translation “fissures” is based on usage of the plural form of the noun in Ps 60:4 HT (60:2 ET), where it appears to refer to cracks in the earth caused by an earthquake. Perhaps deep ravines or gorges are in view, or the word is a proper noun (“all the way to Shebarim”).

[7:5]  8 sn The precise geographical location of the Israelite defeat at this “steep slope” is uncertain.

[7:5]  9 tn Or “army’s.”

[7:5]  10 tn Heb “and the heart of the people melted and became water.”

[7:12]  11 tn Heb “they turn [the] back before their enemies because they are set apart [to destruction by the Lord].”

[7:12]  12 tn The second person pronoun is plural in Hebrew, indicating these words are addressed to the entire nation.

[9:11]  14 tn Heb “your servants.”

[11:21]  15 tn Heb “went and cut off the Anakites from the hill country.”

[11:21]  16 tn Heb “and from all the hill country of Israel.”

[11:23]  17 tn Heb “took.”

[11:23]  18 tn Heb “according to all which the Lord said to Moses.” The translation assumes this refers to the promise of the land (see 1:3). Another possibility is that it refers to the Lord’s instructions, in which case the phrase could be translated, “just as the Lord had instructed Moses” (so NLT; cf. also NIV “had directed Moses”).

[11:23]  19 tn Heb “and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their allotted portions by their tribes.”

[22:11]  20 tn Heb “the sons of Israel heard, saying.”

[22:11]  21 tn Heb “toward the front of.”

[23:16]  22 tn Heb “when you violate the covenant of the Lord your God which he commanded you.”

[23:16]  23 tn Heb “and you walk and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

[23:16]  24 tn Or “perish.”

[24:15]  25 tn Heb “if it is bad in your eyes.”

[24:15]  26 tn Or “to serve.”

[24:15]  27 tn Or “will serve.”

[24:15]  28 tn Heb “your fathers.”

[24:15]  29 tn Or “served.”

[24:15]  30 tn Heb “the river,” referring to the Euphrates. This has been specified in the translation for clarity; see v. 3.

[24:15]  31 tn Heb “house.”

[24:15]  32 tn Or “will serve.”
