Yohanes 4:7

4:7 A Samaritan woman ¹  came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me some water ²  to drink.”

8:51 I tell you the solemn truth, ³  if anyone obeys ⁴  my teaching, ⁵  he will never see death.” ⁶ 

[4:7]  ¹ tn Grk “a woman from Samaria.” According to BDAG 912 s.v. Σαμάρεια, the prepositional phrase is to be translated as a simple attributive: “γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας a Samaritan woman J 4:7.”

[4:7]  ² tn The phrase “some water” is supplied as the understood direct object of the infinitive πεῖν (pein).

[8:51]  ³ tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

[8:51]  ⁴ tn Grk “If anyone keeps.”

[8:51]  ⁵ tn Grk “my word.”

[8:51]  ⁶ tn Grk “he will never see death forever.” The Greek negative here is emphatic.

[8:51]  sn Those who keep Jesus’ words will not see death because they have already passed from death to life (cf. 5:24). In Johannine theology eternal life begins in the present rather than in the world to come.
