[1:35]  2 tn “There” is not in the Greek text but is implied by current English idiom.

[4:3]  3 sn The author doesn’t tell why Jesus chose to set out once more for Galilee. Some have suggested that the Pharisees turned their attention to Jesus because John the Baptist had now been thrown into prison. But the text gives no hint of this. In any case, perhaps Jesus simply did not want to provoke a confrontation at this time (knowing that his “hour” had not yet come).

[5:15]  4 tn Or “the Jewish authorities”; Grk “the Jews.” See the note on the phrase “Jewish leaders” in v. 10.

[6:67]  5 tn Questions prefaced with μή (mh) in Greek anticipate a negative answer. This can sometimes be indicated by using a “tag” at the end in English (here it is “do you?”).

[9:14]  6 tn Or “clay” (moistened earth of a clay-like consistency).

[9:14]  7 tn Grk “and opened his eyes” (an idiom referring to restoration of sight).

[9:14]  8 sn This is a parenthetical note by the author.

[15:3]  12 sn The phrase you are clean already occurs elsewhere in the Gospel of John only at the washing of the disciples’ feet in 13:10, where Jesus had used it of the disciples being cleansed from sin. This further confirms the proposed understanding of John 15:2 and 15:6 since Judas was specifically excluded from this statement (but not all of you).

[20:3]  13 tn Grk “went out and were coming to the tomb.”
