[7:19]  1 tn Heb “and shall rest” (so KJV, ASV); NASB, NIV, NRSV “and settle.”

[7:19]  2 tn The meaning of this word (נַהֲלֹל, nahalol) is uncertain; some understand this as referring to another type of thorn bush. For bibliography, see HALOT 676 s.v. I *נַהֲלֹל.

[13:9]  3 tn Heb “the day of the Lord.”

[13:9]  4 tn Heb “[with] cruelty, and fury, and rage of anger.” Three synonyms for “anger” are piled up at the end of the line to emphasize the extraordinary degree of divine anger that will be exhibited in this judgment.

[13:9]  5 tn Heb “making desolate.”

[13:9]  6 tn Or “land” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NLT).

[13:21]  7 tn The word “ruined” is supplied in the translation for clarification.

[13:21]  8 tn The precise referent of this word in uncertain. See HALOT 29 s.v. *אֹחַ. Various English versions translate as “owls” (e.g., NAB, NASB), “wild dogs” (NCV); “jackals” (NIV); “howling creatures” (NRSV, NLT).

[13:21]  9 tn Heb “will skip there.”

[19:7]  10 tn Heb “the plants by the river, by the mouth of the river.”

[19:7]  11 tn Heb “will dry up, [being] scattered, and it will vanish.”

[23:13]  12 tn Heb “this people [that] is not.”

[23:13]  13 tn For the meaning of this word, see HALOT 118 s.v. *בַּחוּן.

[23:13]  14 tn Or “laid bare.” For the meaning of this word, see HALOT 889 s.v. ערר.

[23:13]  15 sn This verse probably refers to the Assyrian destruction of Babylon.

[32:14]  16 tn Or “noisy” (NAB, NIV, NCV).

[32:14]  17 tn Hebrew עֹפֶל (’ofel), probably refers here to a specific area within the city of Jerusalem. See HALOT 861 s.v. II עֹפֶל.

[32:14]  18 tn The Hebrew text has בְעַד מְעָרוֹת (vÿad mÿarot). The force of בְעַד, which usually means “behind, through, round about,” or “for the benefit of,” is uncertain here. HALOT 616 s.v. *מְעָרָה takes מְעָרוֹת (mÿarot) as a homonym of “cave” and define it here as “cleared field.” Despite these lexical problems, the general point of the statement seems clear – the city will be uninhabited.

[32:14]  19 tn Heb “the joy of wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks.”

[49:10]  20 tn Heb “and the heat and the sun will not strike them.” In Isa 35:7, its only other occurrence in the OT, שָׁרָב (sharav) stands parallel to “parched ground” and in contrast to “pool.” In later Hebrew and Aramaic it refers to “dry heat, heat of the sun” (Jastrow 1627 s.v.). Here it likely has this nuance and forms a hendiadys with “sun.”

[63:14]  21 tn The words “to graze” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[63:14]  22 tn Or “so” (KJV, ASV), or “thus” (NAB, NRSV).

[63:14]  23 tn Heb “making for yourself a majestic name.”
