5:24 Therefore, as flaming fire 1  devours straw,

and dry grass disintegrates in the flames,

so their root will rot,

and their flower will blow away like dust. 2

[37:29]  5 tc Heb “and your complacency comes up into my ears.” The parallelism is improved if שַׁאֲנַנְךָ (shaanankha, “your complacency”) is emended to שְׁאוֹנְךָ (shÿonÿkha, “your uproar”). See M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 237-38. However, the LXX seems to support the MT and Sennacherib’s cavalier dismissal of Yahweh depicts an arrogant complacency (J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah [NICOT], 1:658, n. 10).

[45:18]  7 tn Heb “he [is] the God.” The article here indicates uniqueness.

[45:18]  8 tn Or “unformed.” Gen 1:2 describes the world as “unformed” (תֹהוּ, tohu) prior to God’s creative work, but God then formed the world and made it fit for habitation.

[66:17]  9 tn Heb “the ones who consecrate themselves and the ones who purify themselves toward the orchards [or “gardens”] after the one in the midst.” The precise meaning of the statement is unclear, though it is obvious that some form of idolatry is in view.

[66:17]  10 tn Heb “ones who eat the flesh of the pig and the disgusting thing and the mouse.”

[66:17]  11 tn Heb “together they will come to an end.”
