Yesaya 5:13

because of their lack of understanding.

[5:13]  2 tn The suffixed (perfect) form of the verb is used; in this way the coming event is described for rhetorical effect as occurring or as already completed.

[5:13]  3 tn The third masculine singular suffix refers back to “my people.”

[5:13]  4 tn Heb “Their glory will be men of hunger.” כָּבוֹד (kavod, “glory”) is in opposition to הָמוֹן (hamon, “masses”) and refers here to the rich and prominent members of the nation. Some prefer to repoint מְתֵי (mÿtey, “men of”) as מִתֵי (mitey, “dead ones of”).

[5:13]  5 tn The third masculine singular suffix refers back to “my people.”

[5:13]  6 tn Heb “and their masses will be parched [by] thirst.”

[47:15]  7 tn Heb “So they will be to you”; NIV “That is all they can do for you.”

[47:15]  8 tn Heb “that for which you toiled, your traders from your youth.” The omen readers and star gazers are likened to merchants with whom Babylon has had an ongoing economic relationship.

[52:5]  11 tn The verb appears to be a Hiphil form from the root יָלַל (yalal, “howl”), perhaps here in the sense of “mock.” Some emend the form to יְהוֹלָּלוֹ (yÿhollalo) and understand a Polel form of the root הָלַל meaning here “mock, taunt.”

[52:5]  12 tn The verb is apparently a Hitpolal form (with assimilated tav, ת) from the root נָאַץ (naats), but GKC 151-52 §55.b explains it as a mixed form, combining Pual and Hitpolel readings.

[52:12]  13 tn Heb “or go in flight”; NAB “leave in headlong flight.”

[57:9]  14 tn Heb “you journey with oil.”

[57:9]  15 tn Heb “the king.” Since the context refers to idolatry and child sacrifice (see v. 5), some emend מֶלֶך (melekh, “king”) to “Molech.” Perhaps Israel’s devotion to her idols is likened here to a subject taking tribute to a ruler.

[57:9]  16 tn Heb “and you multiply your perfumes.”

[57:9]  17 sn Israel’s devotion to her idols is inordinate, irrational, and self-destructive.
