Yesaya 34:8

34:8 For the Lord has planned a day of revenge, ¹ 

a time when he will repay Edom for her hostility toward Zion. ²

When the time comes to punish them, they will be destroyed.

Mikha 7:4

7:4 The best of them is like a thorn;

the most godly among them are more dangerous than a row of thorn bushes. ⁴ 

The day you try to avoid by posting watchmen –

your appointed time of punishment – is on the way, ⁵ 

and then you will experience confusion. ⁶ 

Lukas 21:22

[34:8]  ¹ tn Heb “for a day of vengeance [is] for the Lord.”

[34:8]  ² tn Heb “a year of repayment for the strife of Zion.” The translation assumes that רִיב (riv) refers to Edom’s hostility toward Zion. Another option is to understand רִיב (riv) as referring to the Lord’s taking up Zion’s cause. In this case one might translate, “a time when he will repay Edom and vindicate Zion.”

[10:15]  ³ tn Or “objects of mockery.”

[7:4]  ⁴ tn Heb “[the] godly from a row of thorn bushes.” The preposition מִן (min) is comparative and the comparative element (perhaps “sharper” is the idea) is omitted. See BDB 582 s.v. 6 and GKC 431 §133.e.

[7:4]  ⁵ tn Heb “the day of your watchmen, your appointed [time], is coming.” The present translation takes “watchmen” to refer to actual sentries. However, the “watchmen” could refer figuratively to the prophets who had warned Judah of approaching judgment. In this case one could translate, “The day your prophets warned about – your appointed time of punishment – is on the way.”

[7:4]  ⁶ tn Heb “and now will be their confusion.”

[21:22]  ⁷ tn Or “of punishment.” This is a time of judgment.

[21:22]  ⁸ tn The passive construction with the infinitive πλησθῆναι (plhsqhnai) has been translated as an active construction for simplicity, in keeping with contemporary English style.
