Yesaya 1:22

1:22 Your ¹  silver has become scum, ² 

your beer is diluted with water. ³ 

Yesaya 33:4

33:4 Your plunder ⁴  disappears as if locusts were eating it; ⁵ 

they swarm over it like locusts! ⁶ 

[1:22]  ¹ tn The pronoun is feminine singular; personified Jerusalem (see v. 21) is addressed.

[1:22]  ² tn Or “dross.” The word refers to the scum or impurites floating on the top of melted metal.

[1:22]  ³ sn The metaphors of silver becoming impure and beer being watered down picture the moral and ethical degeneration that had occurred in Jerusalem.

[33:4]  ⁴ tn The pronoun is plural; the statement is addressed to the nations who have stockpiled plunder from their conquests of others.

[33:4]  ⁵ tn Heb “and your plunder is gathered, the gathering of the locust.”

[33:4]  ⁶ tn Heb “like a swarm of locusts swarming on it.”
