28:8 From earliest times, the prophets who preceded you and me invariably ¹  prophesied war, disaster, ²  and plagues against many countries and great kingdoms.

Yehezkiel 32:22-23

32:22 “Assyria is there with all her assembly around her grave, ³  all of them struck down by the sword. ⁴  32:23 Their ⁵  graves are located in the remote slopes of the pit. ⁶  Her assembly is around her grave, all of them struck down by the sword, those who spread terror in the land of the living.

[28:8]  ¹ tn The word “invariably” is not in the text but is implicit in the context and in the tense of the Hebrew verb. It is supplied in the translation for clarity and to help bring out the contrast in the next verse.

[28:8]  ² tc Many Hebrew mss read “starvation/famine” which is the second member of a common triad “sword, famine, and plague” in Jeremiah. This triad occurs thirteen times in the book and undoubtedly influenced a later scribe to read “starvation [= famine]” here. For this triad see the note on 14:14. The words “disaster and plagues” are missing in the LXX.

[32:22]  ³ tn Heb “around him his graves.” The masculine pronominal suffixes are problematic; the expression is best emended to correspond to the phrase “around her grave” in v. 23. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:219.

[32:22]  ⁴ tn Heb “all of them slain, the ones felled by the sword.” See as well vv. 23-24.

[32:23]  ⁵ tn Heb “whose.”

[32:23]  ⁶ tn The only other occurrence of the phrase “remote slopes of the pit” is in Isa 14:15.
