  Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire; Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost Thy sev’nfold gifts impart. Refrain Praise to Thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Thy blessèd unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love; Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight. Refrain Anoint and cheer our soilèd face With the abundance of Thy grace; Keep far our foes, give peace at home; Where Thou art Guide, no ill can come.   Holy, and true, and righteous Lord, I wait to prove Thy perfect will, Be mindful of Thy gracious Word, And stamp me with Thy Spirit’s seal. Open my faith’s interior eye, Display Thy glory from above; And all I am shall sink and die, Lost in astonishment and love. Confound, o’erpower me by Thy grace, I would be by myself abhorred; All might, all majesty, all praise, All glory, be to Christ my Lord. Now let me gain perfection’s height, Now let me into nothing fall; Be less than nothing in Thy sight, And feel that Christ is all in all!

  The Lord proclaims His grace abroad! “Behold, I change your hearts of stone; Each shall renounce his idol god, And serve, henceforth, the Lord alone. “My grace, a flowing stream, proceeds To wash your filthiness away; Ye shall abhor your former deeds, And learn My statutes to obey. “My truth the great design ensures, I give Myself away to you; You shall be Mine, I will be yours, Your God unalterably true. “Yet not unsought or unimplored, The plenteous grace I shall confer; No—your whole hearts shall seek the Lord, I’ll put a praying spirit there. “From the first breath of life divine Down to the last expiring hour, The gracious work shall all be Mine, Begun and ended in My pow’r.”

  O for a glance of heavenly day, To take this stubborn heart away, And thaw, with beams of love divine, This heart, this frozen heart of mine. The rocks can rend; the earth can quake; The seas can roar; the mountains shake: Of feeling, all things show some sign, But this unfeeling heart of mine. To hear the sorrows Thou hast felt, O Lord, an adamant would melt: But I can read each moving line, And nothing moves this heart of mine. Thy judgments, too, which devils fear— Amazing thought! unmoved I hear; Goodness and wrath in vain combine To stir this stupid heart of mine. But something yet can do the deed; And that dear something much I need: Thy Spirit can from dross refine, And move and melt this heart of mine.

  Spirit of God, that moved of old Upon the waters’ darkened face, Come, when our faithless hearts are cold, And stir them with an inward grace. Thou that art power and peace combined, All highest strength, all purest love, The rushing of the mighty wind, The brooding of the gentle dove. Come, give us still Thy powerful aid, And urge us on, and make us Thine; Nor leave the hearts that once were made Fit temples for Thy grace divine.
