[8:18]  1 tc Smr and Lucian add “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” the standard way of rendering this almost stereotypical formula (cf. Deut 1:8; 6:10; 9:5, 27; 29:13; 30:20; 34:4). The MT’s harder reading presumptively argues for its originality, however.

[13:5]  2 tn Heb “or dreamer of dreams.” See note on this expression in v. 1.

[13:5]  3 tn Heb “your midst” (so NAB, NRSV). The severity of the judgment here (i.e., capital punishment) is because of the severity of the sin, namely, high treason against the Great King. Idolatry is a violation of the first two commandments (Deut 5:6-10) as well as the spirit and intent of the Shema (Deut 6:4-5).

[14:23]  4 tn This refers to wine in the early stages of fermentation. In its later stages it becomes wine (יַיִן, yayin) in its mature sense.

[19:16]  5 tn Heb “violent” (חָמָס, khamas). This is a witness whose motivation from the beginning is to do harm to the accused and who, therefore, resorts to calumny and deceit. See I. Swart and C. VanDam, NIDOTTE 2:177-80.

[19:16]  6 tn Or “rebellion.” Rebellion against God’s law is in view (cf. NAB “of a defection from the law”).

[29:12]  7 tn Heb “for you to pass on into the covenant of the Lord your God and into his oath, which the Lord your God is cutting with you today.”

[29:13]  8 tn Heb “in order to establish you today to him for a people and he will be to you for God.” Verses 10-13 are one long sentence in Hebrew. The translation divides this into two sentences for stylistic reasons.

[29:13]  9 tn Heb “fathers” (also in v. 25).

[19:19]  10 tn Heb “you will burn out” (בִּעַרְתָּ, biarta). Like a cancer, unavenged sin would infect the whole community. It must, therefore, be excised by the purging out of its perpetrators who, presumably, remained unrepentant (cf. Deut 13:6; 17:7, 12; 21:21; 22:21-22, 24; 24:7).

[20:4]  11 tn Or “to save you” (so KJV, NASB, NCV); or “to deliver you.”

[22:7]  12 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation seeks to reflect with “be sure.”

[8:2]  13 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[8:2]  14 tn Or “wilderness” (so KJV, NRSV, NLT); likewise in v. 15.

[2:30]  15 tc The translation follows the LXX in reading the first person pronoun. The MT, followed by many English versions, has a second person masculine singular pronoun, “your.”

[2:30]  16 tn Heb “hardened his spirit” (so KJV, NASB, NRSV); NIV “made his spirit stubborn.”

[2:30]  17 tn Heb “made his heart obstinate” (so KJV, NASB); NRSV “made his heart defiant.”

[2:30]  18 tn Heb “into your hand.”

[20:18]  19 tn Heb “to do according to all their abominations which they do for their gods.”

[19:6]  20 tn Heb “and overtake him, for the road is long.”

[19:6]  21 tn Heb “smite with respect to life,” that is, fatally.

[19:6]  22 tn Heb “no judgment of death.”
