The Opening Exhortation

5:1 Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them: ¹  “Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them!

Ulangan 17:16

17:16 Moreover, he must not accumulate horses for himself or allow the people to return to Egypt to do so, ²  for the Lord has said you must never again return that way.

Ulangan 22:2

22:2 If the owner ³  does not live ⁴  near you or you do not know who the owner is, ⁵  then you must corral the animal ⁶  at your house and let it stay with you until the owner looks for it; then you must return it to him.

Ulangan 24:20

24:20 When you beat your olive tree you must not repeat the procedure; ⁷  the remaining olives belong to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow.

[17:16]  ² tn Heb “in order to multiply horses.” The translation uses “do so” in place of “multiply horses” to avoid redundancy (cf. NAB, NIV).

[22:2]  ³ tn Heb “your brother” (also later in this verse).

[22:2]  ⁴ tn Heb “is not.” The idea of “residing” is implied.

[22:2]  ⁵ tn Heb “and you do not know him.”
