Threat and Blessing following Covenant Disobedience

4:25 After you have produced children and grandchildren and have been in the land a long time, 1  if you become corrupt and make an image of any kind 2  and do other evil things before the Lord your God that enrage him, 3

Ulangan 6:3

Konteks
6:3 Pay attention, Israel, and be careful to do this so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in number 4  – as the Lord, God of your ancestors, 5  said to you, you will have a land flowing with milk and honey.

Ulangan 8:1

Konteks
The Lord’s Provision in the Desert

8:1 You must keep carefully all these commandments 6  I am giving 7  you today so that you may live, increase in number, 8  and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised to your ancestors. 9

Ulangan 18:16

21:5 Then the Levitical priests 11  will approach (for the Lord your God has chosen them to serve him and to pronounce blessings in his name, 12  and to decide 13  every judicial verdict 14 )

Ulangan 30:19

Konteks
30:19 Today I invoke heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set life and death, blessing and curse, before you. Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live!

[4:25]  1 tn Heb “have grown old in the land,” i.e., been there for a long time.

[4:25]  2 tn Heb “a form of anything.” Cf. NAB, NASB, NRSV, TEV “an idol.”

[4:25]  3 tn The infinitive construct is understood here as indicating the result, not the intention, of their actions.

[6:3]  4 tn Heb “may multiply greatly” (so NASB, NRSV); the words “in number” have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[6:3]  5 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 10, 18, 23).

[8:1]  6 tn The singular term (מִצְוָה, mitsvah) includes the whole corpus of covenant stipulations, certainly the book of Deuteronomy at least (cf. Deut 5:28; 6:1, 25; 7:11; 11:8, 22; 15:5; 17:20; 19:9; 27:1; 30:11; 31:5). The plural (מִצְוֹת, mitsot) refers to individual stipulations (as in vv. 2, 6).

[8:1]  7 tn Heb “commanding” (so NASB). For stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy, “giving” has been used in the translation (likewise in v. 11).

[8:1]  8 tn Heb “multiply” (so KJV, NASB, NLT); NIV, NRSV “increase.”

[8:1]  9 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 16, 18).

[18:16]  10 tn The Hebrew text uses the collective singular in this verse: “my God…lest I die.”

[21:5]  11 tn Heb “the priests, the sons of Levi.”

[21:5]  12 tn Heb “in the name of the Lord.” See note on Deut 10:8. The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[21:5]  13 tn Heb “by their mouth.”

[21:5]  14 tn Heb “every controversy and every blow.”
