Instructions to the Transjordanian Tribes

3:18 At that time I instructed you as follows: “The Lord your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over before your fellow Israelites ¹  equipped for battle.

Ulangan 3:21

3:21 I also commanded Joshua at the same time, “You have seen everything the Lord your God did to these two kings; he ²  will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are going. ³

Ulangan 26:3

26:3 You must go to the priest in office at that time and say to him, “I declare today to the Lord your ¹⁰  God that I have come into the land that the Lord ¹¹  promised ¹²  to our ancestors ¹³  to give us.”

[3:21]  ² tn Heb “the Lord.” The translation uses the pronoun (“he”) for stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy.

[8:18]  ⁴ tc Smr and Lucian add “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” the standard way of rendering this almost stereotypical formula (cf. Deut 1:8; 6:10; 9:5, 27; 29:13; 30:20; 34:4). The MT’s harder reading presumptively argues for its originality, however.

[9:12]  ⁵ tc Heb “a casting.” The MT reads מַסֵּכָה (massekhah, “a cast thing”) but some mss and Smr add עֵגֶל (’egel, “calf”), “a molten calf” or the like (Exod 32:8). Perhaps Moses here omits reference to the calf out of contempt for it.

[13:6]  ⁶ tn Heb “your brother, the son of your mother.” In a polygamous society it was not rare to have half brothers and sisters by way of a common father and different mothers.

[13:6]  ⁷ tn In the Hebrew text these words are in the form of a brief quotation: “entice you secretly saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods.’”

[13:6]  ⁸ tn Heb “fathers” (also in v. 17).

[13:6]  ⁹ tn Heb “which you have not known, you or your fathers.” (cf. KJV, ASV; on “fathers” cf. v. 18).

[26:3]  ¹⁰ tc For the MT reading “your God,” certain LXX mss have “my God,” a contextually superior rendition followed by some English versions (e.g., NAB, NASB, TEV). Perhaps the text reflects dittography of the kaf (כ) at the end of the word with the following preposition כִּי (ki).

[26:3]  ¹¹ tc The Syriac adds “your God” to complete the usual formula.

[26:3]  ¹² tn Heb “swore on oath.”

[26:3]  ¹³ tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 7, 15).
