[20:9]  1 tn The Hebrew text includes “to the people,” but this phrase has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[20:9]  2 tn Heb “princes of hosts.”

[1:15]  3 tn Or “selected”; Heb “took.”

[33:21]  4 tn The Hebrew term מְחֹקֵק (mÿkhoqeq; Poel participle of חָקַק, khaqaq, “to inscribe”) reflects the idea that the recorder of allotments (the “ruler”) is able to set aside for himself the largest and best. See E. H. Merrill, Deuteronomy (NAC), 444-45.

[33:21]  5 tn Heb “covered in” (if from the root סָפַן, safan; cf. HALOT 764-65 s.v. ספן qal).

[33:21]  6 tn Heb “heads” (in the sense of chieftains).

[9:12]  7 tc Heb “a casting.” The MT reads מַסֵּכָה (massekhah, “a cast thing”) but some mss and Smr add עֵגֶל (’egel, “calf”), “a molten calf” or the like (Exod 32:8). Perhaps Moses here omits reference to the calf out of contempt for it.

[1:38]  8 tn Heb “the one who stands before you”; NAB “your aide”; TEV “your helper.”

[1:38]  9 tn Heb “it”; the referent (the land) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[32:12]  10 tn The distinctive form of the suffix on this verb form indicates that the verb is an imperfect, not a preterite. As such it draws attention to God’s continuing guidance during the period in view.

[33:5]  11 tn Heb “he was king.” The present translation avoids the sudden shift in person and the mistaken impression that Moses is the referent by specifying the referent as “the Lord.”

[33:5]  12 sn Jeshurun is a term of affection referring to Israel, derived from the Hebrew verb יָשַׁר (yashar, “be upright”). See note on the term in Deut 32:15.

[33:5]  13 sn The following blessing is given to the tribes in order, although the tribe of Simeon is curiously missing from the list.

[3:28]  14 tn Heb “command”; KJV, NASB, NRSV “charge Joshua.”

[8:15]  15 tn Heb “flaming serpents”; KJV, NASB “fiery serpents”; NAB “saraph serpents.” This figure of speech (metonymy) probably describes the venomous and painful results of snakebite. The feeling from such an experience would be like a burning fire (שָׂרָף, saraf).

[8:15]  16 tn Heb “the one who brought out for you water.” In the Hebrew text this continues the preceding sentence, but the translation begins a new sentence here for stylistic reasons.

[1:13]  17 tn The Hebrew verb נְבֹנִים (nÿvonim, from בִּין [bin]) is a Niphal referring to skill or intelligence (see T. Fretheim, NIDOTTE 1:652-53).

[1:30]  18 tn The Hebrew participle indicates imminent future action here, though some English versions treat it as a predictive future (“will go ahead of you,” NCV; cf. also TEV, CEV).

[1:30]  19 tn Heb “according to all which he did for you in Egypt before your eyes.”

[10:11]  20 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 10:4.

[10:11]  21 tn Heb “before” (so KJV, ASV); NAB, NRSV “at the head of.”

[10:11]  22 tn After the imperative these subordinated jussive forms (with prefixed vav) indicate purpose or result.

[10:11]  23 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 15, 22).

[29:5]  24 tn The Hebrew text includes “on you.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[29:5]  25 tn The Hebrew text includes “from on your feet.”

[31:2]  26 tn Or “am no longer able to lead you” (NIV, NLT); Heb “am no longer able to go out and come in.”

[8:2]  27 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[8:2]  28 tn Or “wilderness” (so KJV, NRSV, NLT); likewise in v. 15.

[31:7]  29 tn The Hebrew text includes “and said to him.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[31:7]  30 tn Heb “fathers” (also in v. 20).

[21:2]  31 tn Heb “surrounding the slain [one].”

[27:1]  32 tn Heb “the whole commandment.” See note at 5:31.

[27:1]  33 tn Heb “commanding”; NAB “which I enjoin on you today” (likewise in v. 10).

[19:12]  34 tn The גֹאֵל הַדָּם (goel haddam, “avenger of blood”) would ordinarily be a member of the victim’s family who, after due process of law, was invited to initiate the process of execution (cf. Num 35:16-28). See R. Hubbard, NIDOTTE 1:789-94.

[29:10]  35 tc Heb “your heads, your tribes.” The Syriac presupposes either “heads of your tribes” or “your heads, your judges,” etc. (reading שֹׁפְטֵכֶם [shofÿtekhem] for שִׁבְטֵיכֶם [shivtekhem]). Its comparative difficulty favors the originality of the MT reading. Cf. KJV “your captains of your tribes”; NRSV “the leaders of your tribes”; NLT “your tribal leaders.”

[3:18]  36 tn Heb “your brothers, the sons of Israel.”

[20:5]  37 tn Heb “people” (also in vv. 8, 9).

[20:5]  38 tn Heb “Who [is] the man” (also in vv. 6, 7, 8).

[20:5]  39 tn The Hebrew term חָנַךְ (khanakh) occurs elsewhere only with respect to the dedication of Solomon’s temple (1 Kgs 8:63 = 2 Chr 7:5). There it has a religious connotation which, indeed, may be the case here as well. The noun form (חָנֻכָּה, khanukah) is associated with the consecration of the great temple altar (2 Chr 7:9) and of the postexilic wall of Jerusalem (Neh 12:27). In Maccabean times the festival of Hanukkah was introduced to celebrate the rededication of the temple following its desecration by Antiochus IV Epiphanes (1 Macc 4:36-61).

[20:5]  40 tn Heb “another man.”

[28:13]  41 tn Heb “the Lord your God’s.” See note on “he” in 28:8.

[28:13]  42 tn Heb “commanding” (so NRSV); NASB “which I charge you today.”

[31:23]  43 tn Heb “he.” Since the pronoun could be taken to refer to Moses, the referent has been specified as “the Lord” in the translation for clarity. See also the note on the word “you” later in this verse.

[31:23]  44 tc The LXX reads, “as the Lord promised them, and he will be with you.” This relieves the problem of Moses apparently promising to be with Joshua as the MT reads on the surface (“I will be with you”). However, the reading of the LXX is clearly an attempt to clarify an existing obscurity and therefore is unlikely to reflect the original.

[33:16]  45 tn The expression “him who resided in the bush” is frequently understood as a reference to the appearance of the Lord to Moses at Sinai from a burning bush (so NIV, NCV, TEV, CEV, NLT; cf. Exod 2:2-6; 3:2, 4). To make this reference clear the word “burning” is supplied in the translation.

[33:16]  46 sn This apparently refers to Joseph’s special status among his brothers as a result of his being chosen by God to save the family from the famine and to lead Egypt.
