[2:25]  1 tn Heb “under heaven” (so NIV, NRSV).

[2:25]  2 tn Heb “from before you.”

[4:38]  3 tn Heb “(as) an inheritance,” that is, landed property that one can pass on to one’s descendants.

[5:21]  4 tn The Hebrew verb used here (חָמַד, khamad) is different from the one translated “crave” (אָוַה, ’avah) in the next line. The former has sexual overtones (“lust” or the like; cf. Song of Sol 2:3) whereas the latter has more the idea of a desire or craving for material things.

[5:21]  5 tn Heb “your neighbor’s.” See note on the term “fellow man” in v. 19.

[5:21]  6 tn Heb “your neighbor’s.” The pronoun is used in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[5:21]  7 tn Heb “or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

[6:21]  8 tn Heb “to your son.”

[6:21]  9 tn Heb “by a strong hand.” The image is that of a warrior who, with weapon in hand, overcomes his enemies. The Lord is commonly depicted as a divine warrior in the Book of Deuteronomy (cf. 5:15; 7:8; 9:26; 26:8).

[7:14]  10 sn One of the ironies about the promises to the patriarchs concerning offspring was the characteristic barrenness of the wives of the men to whom these pledges were made (cf. Gen 11:30; 25:21; 29:31). Their affliction is in each case described by the very Hebrew word used here (עֲקָרָה, ’aqarah), an affliction that will no longer prevail in Canaan.

[8:19]  11 tn Heb “if forgetting, you forget.” The infinitive absolute is used for emphasis; the translation indicates this with the words “at all” (cf. KJV).

[9:6]  12 tn Heb “stiff-necked” (so KJV, NAB, NIV).

[9:6]  sn The Hebrew word translated stubborn means “stiff-necked.” The image is that of a draft animal that is unsubmissive to the rein or yoke and refuses to bend its neck to draw the load. This is an apt description of OT Israel (Exod 32:9; 33:3, 5; 34:9; Deut 9:13).

[17:4]  13 tn Heb “an abomination” (תּוֹעֵבָה); see note on the word “offensive” in v. 1.

[19:1]  14 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[24:14]  15 tn Heb “your brothers,” but not limited only to actual siblings; cf. NASB “your (+ own NAB) countrymen.”

[24:14]  16 tn Heb “who are in your land in your gates.” The word “living” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[28:8]  17 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” Because English would not typically reintroduce the proper name following a relative pronoun (“he will bless…the Lord your God is giving”), the pronoun (“he”) has been employed here in the translation.

[28:62]  18 tn Or “heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.

[28:62]  19 tn Heb “have not listened to the voice of.”

[33:7]  20 tn The words “the blessing” are supplied in the translation for clarity and stylistic reasons.
