[2:13]  1 sn Wadi Zered. Now known as Wadi el-H£esa, this valley marked the boundary between Moab to the north and Edom to the south.

[2:13]  2 tn Heb “we crossed the Wadi Zered.” This has been translated as “we did so” for stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy.

[11:5]  3 tn See note on these same words in v. 3.

[11:16]  4 tn Heb “Watch yourselves lest your heart turns and you turn aside and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

[26:13]  5 tn Heb “the sacred thing.” The term הַקֹּדֶשׁ (haqqodesh) likely refers to an offering normally set apart for the Lord but, as a third-year tithe, given on this occasion to people in need. Sometimes this is translated as “the sacred portion” (cf. NASB, NIV, NRSV), but that could sound to a modern reader as if a part of the house were being removed and given away.

[26:13]  6 tn Heb “according to all your commandment that you commanded me.” This has been simplified in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[33:5]  7 tn Heb “he was king.” The present translation avoids the sudden shift in person and the mistaken impression that Moses is the referent by specifying the referent as “the Lord.”

[33:5]  8 sn Jeshurun is a term of affection referring to Israel, derived from the Hebrew verb יָשַׁר (yashar, “be upright”). See note on the term in Deut 32:15.

[33:5]  9 sn The following blessing is given to the tribes in order, although the tribe of Simeon is curiously missing from the list.
