Ulangan 2:12
Konteks2:12 Previously the Horites 1 lived in Seir but the descendants of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land it came to possess, the land the Lord gave them.) 2
Ulangan 2:14
Konteks2:14 Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the Lord had vowed to them.
Ulangan 2:22
Konteks2:22 This is exactly what he did for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir when he destroyed the Horites before them so that they could dispossess them and settle in their area to this very day.
Ulangan 4:5
Konteks4:5 Look! I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the Lord my God told me to do, so that you might carry them out in 3 the land you are about to enter and possess.
Ulangan 6:24
Konteks6:24 The Lord commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him 4 so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day.
Ulangan 8:18
Konteks8:18 You must remember the Lord your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, 5 even as he has to this day.
Ulangan 10:15
Konteks10:15 However, only to your ancestors did he 6 show his loving favor, 7 and he chose you, their descendants, 8 from all peoples – as is apparent today.
Ulangan 11:2
Konteks11:2 Bear in mind today that I am not speaking 9 to your children who have not personally experienced the judgments 10 of the Lord your God, which revealed 11 his greatness, strength, and power. 12
Ulangan 26:15
Konteks26:15 Look down from your holy dwelling place in heaven and bless your people Israel and the land you have given us, just as you promised our ancestors – a land flowing with milk and honey.”
Ulangan 27:3
Konteks27:3 Then you must inscribe on them all the words of this law when you cross over, so that you may enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, 13 said to you.
Ulangan 29:28
Konteks29:28 So the Lord has uprooted them from their land in anger, wrath, and great rage and has deported them to another land, as is clear today.”
[2:12] 1 sn Horites. Most likely these are the same as the well-known people of ancient Near Eastern texts described as Hurrians. They were geographically widespread and probably non-Semitic. Genesis speaks of them as the indigenous peoples of Edom that Esau expelled (Gen 36:8-19, 31-43) and also as among those who confronted the kings of the east (Gen 14:6).
[2:12] 2 tn Most modern English versions, beginning with the ASV (1901), regard vv. 10-12 as parenthetical to the narrative.
[4:5] 3 tn Heb “in the midst of” (so ASV).
[6:24] 4 tn Heb “the
[8:18] 5 tc Smr and Lucian add “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” the standard way of rendering this almost stereotypical formula (cf. Deut 1:8; 6:10; 9:5, 27; 29:13; 30:20; 34:4). The MT’s harder reading presumptively argues for its originality, however.
[10:15] 6 tn Heb “the
[10:15] 7 tn Heb “take delight to love.” Here again the verb אָהַב (’ahav, “love”), juxtaposed with בָחַר (bakhar, “choose”), is a term in covenant contexts that describes the
[10:15] 8 tn The Hebrew text includes “after them,” but it is redundant in English style and has not been included in the translation.
[11:2] 9 tn Heb “that not.” The words “I am speaking” have been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
[11:2] 10 tn Heb “who have not known and who have not seen the discipline of the Lord.” The collocation of the verbs “know” and “see” indicates that personal experience (knowing by seeing) is in view. The term translated “discipline” (KJV, ASV “chastisement”) may also be rendered “instruction,” but vv. 2b-6 indicate that the referent of the term is the various acts of divine judgment the Israelites had witnessed.
[11:2] 11 tn The words “which revealed” have been supplied in the translation to show the logical relationship between the terms that follow and the divine judgments. In the Hebrew text the former are in apposition to the latter.
[11:2] 12 tn Heb “his strong hand and his stretched-out arm.”
