[1:36]  1 sn Caleb had, with Joshua, brought back to Israel a minority report from Canaan urging a conquest of the land, for he was confident of the Lord’s power (Num 13:6, 8, 16, 30; 14:30, 38).

[1:36]  2 tn Heb “the Lord.” The pronoun (“me”) has been employed in the translation, since it sounds strange to an English reader for the Lord to speak about himself in third person.

[6:18]  3 tn Heb “upright.”

[6:18]  4 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on the word “his” in v. 17.

[8:20]  5 tn Heb “so you will perish.”

[8:20]  6 tn Heb “listen to the voice of the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[13:18]  7 tn Heb “commanding” (so NASB, NRSV).

[13:18]  8 tc The LXX and Smr add “and good” to bring the phrase in line with a familiar cliché (cf. Deut 6:18; Josh 9:25; 2 Kgs 10:3; 2 Chr 14:1; etc.). This is an unnecessary and improper attempt to force a text into a preconceived mold.

[13:18]  9 tn Heb “in the eyes of the Lord your God.” See note on the word “him” in v. 3.

[17:2]  10 tn Heb “gates.”

[17:2]  11 tn Heb “does the evil in the eyes of the Lord your God.”

[18:12]  12 tn Heb “these abhorrent things.” The repetition is emphatic. For stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy, the same term used earlier in the verse has been translated “detestable” here.

[18:12]  13 tn The translation understands the Hebrew participial form as having an imminent future sense here.

[25:1]  14 tn Heb “men.”

[25:1]  15 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the judges) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[25:1]  16 tn Heb “declare to be just”; KJV, NASB “justify the righteous”; NAB, NIV “acquitting the innocent.”

[25:1]  17 tn Heb “declare to be evil”; NIV “condemning the guilty (+ party NAB).”

[33:13]  18 tn Heb “from the harvest of the heavens.” The referent appears to be good crops produced by the rain that falls from the sky.

[33:19]  19 tn Or “acceptable”; Heb “righteous” (so NASB).

[33:19]  20 tn Heb “suck.”

[33:19]  21 tn Heb “of the sand” (so NRSV, NLT); CEV “the sandy beach.”
