[2:8]  1 sn I will give you the nations. The Lord promises the Davidic king universal dominion.

[72:8]  2 tn The prefixed verbal form is a (shortened) jussive form, indicating this is a prayer of blessing.

[72:8]  3 sn From sea to sea. This may mean from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Dead Sea in the east. See Amos 8:12. The language of this and the following line also appears in Zech 9:10.

[72:8]  4 tn Heb “the river,” a reference to the Euphrates.

[86:9]  5 tn Or “bow down before you.”

[98:3]  6 tn Heb “he remembers his loyal love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel.”

[98:3]  7 tn Heb “the deliverance of our God,” with “God” being a subjective genitive (= God delivers).

[45:22]  8 tn The Niphal imperative with prefixed vav (ו) indicates purpose after the preceding imperative. The Niphal probably has a tolerative sense, “allow yourselves to be delivered, accept help.”

[46:8]  9 tn The meaning of the verb אָשַׁשׁ (’ashash, which appears here in the Hitpolel stem) is uncertain. BDB 84 s.v. אשׁשׁ relates it to a root meaning “found, establish” in Arabic; HALOT 100 s.v. II אשׁשׁ gives the meaning “pluck up courage.” The imperative with vav (ו) may indicate purpose following the preceding imperative.

[46:8]  10 tn Heb “return [it], rebels, to heart”; NRSV “recall it to mind, you transgressors.”

[46:9]  11 tn Heb “remember the former things, from antiquity”; KJV, ASV “the former things of old.”

[46:9]  12 tn Heb “and there is no other” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[49:6]  13 tn Heb “the protected [or “preserved”] ones.”

[49:6]  14 sn The question is purely rhetorical; it does not imply that the servant was dissatisfied with his commission or that he minimized the restoration of Israel.

[49:6]  15 tn See the note at 42:6.

[49:6]  16 tn Heb “be” (so KJV, ASV); CEV “you must take.”

[49:12]  17 tc The MT reads “Sinim” here; the Dead Sea Scrolls read “Syene,” a location in Egypt associated with modern Aswan. A number of recent translations adopt this reading: “Syene” (NAB, NRSV); “Aswan” (NIV); “Egypt” (NLT).

[49:12]  sn The precise location of the land of Sinim is uncertain, but since the north and west are mentioned in the previous line, it was a probably located in the distant east or south.
