[4:35]  1 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[4:35]  2 tn The phrase “of the lake” is not in the Greek text but is clearly implied; it has been supplied here for clarity.

[14:4]  3 tn The word “expensive” is not in the Greek text but has been included to suggest a connection to the lengthy phrase “costly aromatic oil from pure nard” occurring earlier in v. 3. The author of Mark shortened this long phrase to just one word in Greek when repeated here, and the phrase “expensive ointment” used in the translation is intended as an abbreviated paraphrase.

[14:47]  4 tn See the note on the word “slave” in 10:44.

[15:16]  5 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “So” to indicate that the soldiers’ action is in response to Pilate’s condemnation of the prisoner in v. 15.

[15:16]  6 tn Grk “(that is, the praetorium).”

[15:16]  sn The governor’s residence (Grk “praetorium”) was the Roman governor’s official residence. The one in Jerusalem may have been Herod’s palace in the western part of the city, or the fortress Antonia northwest of the temple area.

[15:16]  7 sn A Roman cohort was a tenth of a legion, about 500-600 soldiers.
