Ask, Seek, Knock

7:7 “Ask ¹  and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door ²  will be opened for you.

Matius 23:29

23:29 “Woe to you, experts in the law ³  and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You ⁴  build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves ⁵  of the righteous.

[7:7]  ¹ sn The three present imperatives in this verse (Ask…seek…knock) are probably intended to call for a repeated or continual approach before God.

[7:7]  ² tn Grk “it”; the referent (a door) is implied by the context and has been specified in the translation here and in v. 8 for clarity.

[23:29]  ³ tn Or “scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.

[23:29]  ⁴ tn Grk “Because you.” Here ὅτι (Joti) has not been translated.

[23:29]  ⁵ tn Or perhaps “the monuments” (see L&N 7.75-76).
