[5:17]  1 tn Grk “not come to abolish but to fulfill.” Direct objects (“these things,” “them”) were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context, but have been supplied here to conform to contemporary English style.

[19:21]  2 tn The words “the money” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[19:21]  3 sn The call for sacrifice comes with a promise of eternal reward: You will have treasure in heaven. Jesus’ call is a test to see how responsive the man is to God’s direction through him. Will he walk the path God’s agent calls him to walk? For a rich person who got it right, see Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10.

[22:24]  4 tn Grk “and raise up seed,” an idiom for fathering children (L&N 23.59).

[22:24]  5 sn A quotation from Deut 25:5. This practice is called levirate marriage (see also Ruth 4:1-12; Mishnah, m. Yevamot; Josephus, Ant. 4.8.23 [4.254-256]). The levirate law is described in Deut 25:5-10. The brother of a man who died without a son had an obligation to marry his brother’s widow. This served several purposes: It provided for the widow in a society where a widow with no children to care for her would be reduced to begging, and it preserved the name of the deceased, who would be regarded as the legal father of the first son produced from that marriage.

[23:29]  6 tn Or “scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.

[23:29]  7 tn Grk “Because you.” Here ὅτι (Joti) has not been translated.

[23:29]  8 tn Or perhaps “the monuments” (see L&N 7.75-76).

[26:15]  9 tn Grk “What will you give to me, and I will betray him to you?”

[26:50]  10 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[26:50]  11 tn Grk “and put their hands on Jesus.”

[27:32]  12 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[27:32]  13 tn Or “conscripted”; or “pressed into service.”

[27:32]  14 sn Jesus was beaten severely with a whip before this (the prelude to crucifixion, known to the Romans as verberatio, mentioned in Matt 27:26; Mark 15:15; John 19:1), so he would have been weak from trauma and loss of blood. Apparently he was unable to bear the cross himself, so Simon was conscripted to help (in all probability this was only the crossbeam, called in Latin the patibulum, since the upright beam usually remained in the ground at the place of execution). Cyrene was located in North Africa where Tripoli is today. Nothing more is known about this Simon. Mark 15:21 names him as father of two people apparently known to Mark’s audience.
