9:18 Once ¹  when Jesus ²  was praying ³  by himself, and his disciples were nearby, he asked them, ⁴  “Who do the crowds say that I am?” ⁵

11:22 But ⁶  when a stronger man ⁷  attacks ⁸  and conquers him, he takes away the first man’s ⁹  armor on which the man relied ¹⁰  and divides up ¹¹  his plunder. ¹² 

[9:18]  ¹ tn Grk “And it happened that.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated. Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[9:18]  ² tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:18]  ³ sn Prayer is a favorite theme of Luke and he is the only one of the gospel authors to mention it in the following texts (with the exception of 22:41): Luke 3:21; 5:16; 6:12; 9:28-29; 11:1; 22:41; 23:34, 46.

[9:18]  ⁴ tn Grk “the disciples were with him, and he asked them, saying.”

[9:18]  ⁵ sn “Who do the crowds say that I am?” The question of who Jesus is occurs frequently in this section of Luke: 7:49; 8:25; 9:9. The answer resolves a major theme of Luke’s Gospel.

[11:22]  ⁶ tn Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[11:22]  ⁷ tn The referent of the expression “a stronger man” is Jesus.

[11:22]  ⁸ tn Grk “stronger man than he attacks.”

[11:22]  ⁹ tn Grk “his”; the referent (the first man mentioned) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[11:22]  ¹² sn Some see the imagery here as similar to Eph 4:7-10, although no opponents are explicitly named in that passage. Jesus has the victory over Satan. Jesus’ acts of healing mean that the war is being won and the kingdom is coming.
