The Sending of the Twelve Apostles

9:1 After ¹  Jesus ²  called ³  the twelve ⁴  together, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure ⁵  diseases,

[9:1]  ² tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:1]  ³ tn An aorist participle preceding an aorist main verb may indicate either contemporaneous (simultaneous) action (“When he called… he gave”) or antecedent (prior) action (“After he called… he gave”). The participle συγκαλεσάμενος (sunkalesameno") has been translated here as indicating antecedent action.

[9:1]  ⁴ tc Some mss add ἀποστόλους (apostolou", “apostles”; א C* L Θ Ψ 070 0291 ˹³ 33 579 892 1241 1424 2542 pc lat) or μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ (maqhta" autou, “his disciples”; C³ al it) here, but such clarifying notes are clearly secondary.

[9:1]  ⁵ sn Note how Luke distinguishes between exorcisms (authority over all demons) and diseases here.

[12:24]  ⁶ tn Or “crows.” Crows and ravens belong to the same family of birds. English uses “crow” as a general word for the family. Palestine has several indigenous members of the crow family.

[12:24]  ⁷ tn Or “God gives them food to eat.” L&N 23.6 has both “to provide food for” and “to give food to someone to eat.”

[12:42]  ⁸ tn Grk “And the Lord said.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[12:42]  ⁹ tn Or “administrator,” “steward” (L&N 37.39).

[12:42]  ¹⁰ tn This term, θεραπεία (qerapeia), describes the group of servants working in a particular household (L&N 46.6).

[13:15]  ¹¹ tn Grk “answered him and said.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been shortened to “answered him.”

[13:15]  ¹² tn Grk “from the manger [feeding trough],” but by metonymy of part for whole this can be rendered “stall.”

[13:15]  ¹³ sn The charge here is hypocrisy, but it is only part one of the response. Various ancient laws detail what was allowed with cattle; see Mishnah, m. Shabbat 5; CD 11:5-6.
