Lukas 7:31

7:31 “To what then should I compare the people ¹  of this generation, and what are they like?

Lukas 20:8

20:8 Then ²  Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you ³  by whose authority ⁴  I do these things.”

[7:31]  ¹ tn Grk “men,” but this is a generic use of ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo"). The comparison that follows in vv. 32-34 describes “this generation,” not Jesus and John.

[20:8]  ² tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[20:8]  ³ sn Neither will I tell you. Though Jesus gave no answer, the analogy he used to their own question makes his view clear. His authority came from heaven.

[20:8]  ⁴ tn On this phrase, see BDAG 844 s.v. ποῖος 2.a.γ. This is exactly the same phrase as in v. 2.
