Lukas 6:49

Konteks
6:49 But the person who hears and does not put my words into practice 1  is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When 2  the river burst against that house, 3  it collapsed immediately, and was utterly destroyed!” 4

Lukas 12:48

Konteks
12:48 But the one who did not know his master’s will 5  and did things worthy of punishment 6  will receive a light beating. 7  From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, 8  and from the one who has been entrusted with much, 9  even more will be asked. 10

[6:49]  1 tn Grk “does not do [them].”

[6:49]  2 tn Grk “against which”; because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, the relative clause was converted to a temporal clause in the translation and a new sentence started here.

[6:49]  3 tn Grk “it”; the referent (that house) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[6:49]  4 tn Grk “and its crash was great.”

[6:49]  sn The extra phrase at the end of this description (and was utterly destroyed) portrays the great disappointment that the destruction of the house caused as it crashed and was swept away.

[12:48]  5 tn Grk “did not know”; the phrase “his master’s will” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context, but must be supplied for the contemporary English reader.

[12:48]  6 tn Grk “blows.”

[12:48]  7 tn Grk “will receive few (blows).”

[12:48]  8 tn Grk “required from him”; but the words “from him” are redundant in English and have not been translated.

[12:48]  9 sn Entrusted with much. To be gifted with precious responsibility is something that requires faithfulness.

[12:48]  10 tn Grk “they will ask even more.”
