Lukas 6:29

6:29 To the person who strikes you on the cheek, ¹  offer the other as well, ²  and from the person who takes away your coat, ³  do not withhold your tunic ⁴  either. ⁵

15:22 But the father said to his slaves, ⁶  ‘Hurry! Bring the best robe, ⁷  and put it on him! Put a ring on his finger ⁸  and sandals ⁹  on his feet!

Lukas 16:2

16:2 So ¹⁰  he called the manager ¹¹  in and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? ¹²  Turn in the account of your administration, ¹³  because you can no longer be my manager.’

[6:29]  ¹ sn The phrase strikes you on the cheek probably pictures public rejection, like the act that indicated expulsion from the synagogue.

[6:29]  ² sn This command to offer the other cheek as well is often misunderstood. It means that there is risk involved in reaching out to people with God’s hope. But if one is struck down in rejection, the disciple is to continue reaching out.

[6:29]  ⁵ sn The command do not withhold your tunic either is again an image of continually being totally at risk as one tries to keep contact with those who are hostile to what Jesus and his disciples offer.

[15:22]  ⁸ tn Grk “hand”; but χείρ (ceir) can refer to either the whole hand or any relevant part of it (L&N 8.30).

[15:22]  ⁹ sn The need for sandals underlines the younger son’s previous destitution, because he was barefoot.

[16:2]  ¹⁰ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the result of the reports the man received about his manager.

[16:2]  ¹¹ tn Grk “him”; the referent (the manager) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[16:2]  ¹² sn Although phrased as a question, the charges were believed by the owner, as his dismissal of the manager implies.

[16:2]  ¹³ tn Or “stewardship”; the Greek word οἰκονομία (oikonomia) is cognate with the noun for the manager (οἰκονόμος, oikonomo").
